Body snatched

So how many times will you need to remove the tank once it's done and dusted. Has the same set up on an early T of mine and never needed to take the tank off.

12" extension, ratchet and its as easy and hell.

I finally found a tank, it's an old Nevins water tank. I cut the filler neck down and will TIG a quarter turn bung on it. I gave it a quick cleaning with toothpaste (works well) for now, but will eventually see how it polishes up. It's 12"x27" and holds 12 gallons.....that should get me to the end of my driveway. :thumbsup:IMG_1913.jpg

Just a suggestion.
If you are going to weld a bung in, you may as well put a return pipe and breather pipe in at the same time, just in case.

This is is the inside middle section of mine. I ran the breather right up into the neck and put a return pipe as far away from the fuel pick up as possible. I also baffled the middle section, but you don't have that options.

Pushrod, I like the tank. Is it made from aluminum?
Gerry, I like your tank, too. It's nice you have the float in there. Currently. I have a stick to check fuel level. There is a float in my tank. It's just not connected to the fuel gauge yet. Maybe next year.

I'm going to use a vented cap, with a fuel line from the tank bottom and no sending unit.....is this a bad idea?

Vented cap will allow air in , vent allows air out , IMO you need both , no gas gauge will be fine till you run out .
You'll have a short filler neck so you want a cap that vents in , or no vent at all so as not to spill gas...usually the " pressure relief" vent has a loop that goes higher than the tank to prevent spills , the end of the line should terminate above the tank to prevent a siphon ..

My vent tube is just that, a tube that comes out of the top of the tank which allows air both in and out. I run the tube up in the air an inch or two then put in a 180 deg. bend and head it down toward the ground, ending in some inconspicuous place and add a non-vented cap.

Not at all. My first version just had a hole in the tank cap as a vent.

New one uses an anti roll over valve on the inside of the body. The vent pipe comes from the tank through the perch (the rectangular hole in the picture) into the body, and after the valve, then loops down and dumps through the floor. Just an extra safety precaution and to eliminate gas venting right behind me.

I agree with Gerry, add all the connections that you want now and in the future.

I don't have a vented cap, but I do have a vent with brushes inside to stop any sloshing of the fuel into the vent. On the other side (exact same location) is the return line. In stead of running inside the frame, I used 3 MagDaddys that have a 50 lb pull strength to hold the line in place without drilling the frame. The MagDaddys have a 1/4-20 threaded extension.

Indycars - You may want to consider adding a roll-over valve in that vent line.

My winter project goals lately have been to do something on the bucket daily, even if it's small. The windshield frame is ready for glass, some of the gauges are in the dash, the radiator shell is ready for paint and the gas tank has been mounted. IMG_1961.jpgIMG_1960.jpgIMG_1956.jpgIMG_1941.jpg

Great progress, Pushrod. That's a handsome set of gages, and the gas tank looks cool! Capacity is 12 gallons if I remember correctly. Should be able to get you to the next gas station . . . :p:laugh:

Not much progress to report these days, I've had the killer flu since the day after Christmas. I'm still not 100%, but managed to drop off my windshield to the glass guy this morning. I hope to get back in the garage next week.

Just got done checking your post from beginning to the end. Like what I see so far. You're giving me the itch to start working on mine again. keep the pics coming.

Bet next year you get a FREE flu shot !!

.Each year the CDC (Center for Disease Control) tries to predict (about 6 months prior to flu season) which types of flu are most likely to be the most infectious/acute/prevalent in the upcoming flu season. They choose 5 flu viruses and make up the flu shots based on those 5 only. There are many many more flu viruses out there that are NOT covered by the flu shot.
