Anyone running a flathead? Driveline question

Hi Gang,

It's been a while since I was last here, but I haven't been idle. Picked up a flathead in March and have it just about ready for machining. Build thread here: https://www.fordbarn.com/forum/showthread.php?t=260861

Question to anyone running a flattie; what rear end did you go with? I'm planning on using a T5 transmission and was considering using a banjo rear end, but would prefer something simpler (and cheaper!) to build and maintain. Looking for recommendations.

Use an S10 pickup rear end. Simple and cheap and parts can be found anywhere.

Do a search on the HAMB site.

Thanks all. I was thinking tranny drive shaft and rear from an S-10 would be easiest.

And I'll make sure to search on HAMB.

Is it true that the 4-cyl T5 has a lower first gear? I remember my old 4-banger could get going in second gear no problem...

Hi Sharp. Most 4 cylinder T5s out of S10s had the lower first gear (4.03). The best T5 combination in my opinion is a Firebird/Camaro T5 (with the 2.95 first gear) with an S10 tailshaft on it to get the shifter where you need to be. Many threads on this on the HAMB.
