T spring in an A crossmember

In a few places I've read that you should use a "webbing" in between the rear leaf spring and the model A crossmember. I'm using a 2" model T spring and I've already made shims since the crossmember is 2 1/4. But I've read the warnings about mounting the spring directly against the crossmember but would love some advice as what to use. Also the spring is 37" in width and could not get a definitive answer what the perch to perch length should be, including the shackles. Some have suggested 5" over the spring length, giving about 2 1/2 inches for the shackles and about the same for stretching (preloading) the spring. Any thoughts would be great. Thanks ahead of time.
This is an aftermarket spring presumably originally from speedway.

Also have this posted on the Hot Rod Refuge.
