chevy 292 engine

As in a bored 283?

Ron

new guy here, how do you guy feel about a chevy 292 engine going in my first build

It's actually a little heavier than a small-block Chevy V8, and parts are more expensive too. But I love the idea, and I love the low-end torque too. I look forward to seeing it come together!

I think he is not talking about a bored 283 but the Chevy truck engine of the 60's it was an inline 6, we had one in 1967, it was the standard engine choice and usually coupled with a 3 sp column standard shift

Go with the 283 is my opinion for what it is worth.

Jim

My vote would be with the 283 too

Ron

Yes, the 283 will be cheaper and easier. All smallbock dressup kits will fit it. You can go thru the 283 for about $750 and have good perf. Wanna go unique, go with the 292.
Last 292 I did was for a kid that works for me.....I told him he could get the parts at cost, he'd do all the work, but I'd teach him. Built a tough little inline 6 for under $650.
Headers were the most expensive, so, I welded up a set of headers for him, the tubing was about 100, including the collectors. A small cam was about 180, we got 38mm motorcycle carbs off couple of old junk jap v-twin bikes (carbs have accelerator pumps), sawed off the runners on the intake, welder on some tubing, then mounted the carbs, ported it extensively and a rebuild kit, block was .030 over, and some chrome goodies. Put a Pertronics electronic ignition kit in it.
Acceleration wise, its plenty, as much as you need and more than you can use for a small light hotrod....

Heres a couple more I dug up, milder but still good. You get the jest of things though. 6's have a lot of potential!

Yea T-Odd, that A with the 292 is one of my favorites......sweet!
Simple, Classic, a great runner......all things a true rod ought to be!

You have an enviable position. Two great, can't lose motors and two groups of people wondering what you're going to do with the "other" motor.
