Check around some of the local wrecking yards.......sometimes they'll give you a good deal.......and some will even give you a warranty on a package deal!.....................
Not all rebuilt engines or transmissions are created equal. Even from the best rebuilders a certain percentage fail right out of the box. We won't install a rebuilt engine at my work because of the high failure rate and the fact most rebuilders won't stand behind any labor or things like gaskets if you have to pull it and replace it.
For the money I still think one of the best deals going are the Goodwrench crate engines. You can pick up a brand new engine with a warranty for somewhere in the neighborhood of $ 1300 last time I checked. Put a mild cam in it, an aluminum intake and carb plus your accessories, and you will be under $ 2,000.00. Well worth saving up for IMO. Years ago I put one of these in a guys Vette and it was the nicest engine replacement I have ever done, very clean and straight forward.
Ive installed a crate engine package from Carolina Machine (CME Group), and a Golen shortblock (www.golenengineservice.com). Also, Im pretty sure my dad put a Goodwench crate in my grandfathers truck back in the 90s. I dont know the difference between the goodwench truck motors and the 290hp GM 'performance' engine however I DO like the ZZ4 longblocks if you can pony up the cash. The local machine shop here usually can throw together a 350 shortblock out of stuff people never paid off, for peanuts if youre up a crick. Also, our local tech school builds shortblocks and will let them go for super cheap (since its an educational institution and they get state aid, they cant charge for the labor).

Yes, the GoodWrench Motors are a good value, but don't look past others like Masterbuilt Motors and Others. Theres even local rebuilders that can give you a good deal on a rebuilt motor. Check both OnLine and in the PhoneBook.
Blueprint Engines out of Iowa, USA. Speedway, Summit and Jegs all sell them. I think the GM engines are out of Mexico, if that makes any difference to you.
Got about 7k on my GW engine, with no problems. I got it from a buddy when it had 2/3k on it when I totaled his truck. Had a 2nd generation 700R built up for 650.00 with no core charge.
