Engine paint?

I have been researching engine paint on the forums. I am curious how you paint the engine the same color as the car? Since the car paint is not " high heat" will it peel and flake off? I have read about epoxy primer....

Any thoughts?

If you are not worried about any heat problems, like with most ski boats, they paint their engines with any thing they like, as any glossy paint is insulating... Hope you have driven your ride and fixed any problems that may arrive after driving, like heating problems and such... This should be something to think about before painting your engine, or any running gear for that matter...

Hey Ted,
I see your point, but I plan on painting the engine before installing it in the car, I really don't want to take it all apart just to paint it, I figured I would squirt it while before it was completely assembled.

Some of our members have their Motors a real work of art! Some are totally awesome, like, all the castings are smoothed, and detailed, them painted, then pinstripped. I love the look of a super detailed motor!

The 392 I had built for mine, I did it kinda unique. I had the heads and block powdercoated Satin Black. The valvecovers, oil pan, all the pulleys were black chromed. Blower, distributor housing, Finned timing cover was painted gloss black. Up top, the Hilborne Bugcatcher was powder coated gloss black. All the bolts were SS headed, so, it was a pleasure to look at.
The owner brought his racecar hauler into my shop with a old 60's model Altered he'd just bought. It was compltetly reburbished and he wanted to run it in the nastogia class. He took one look at that motor and bought it for twice what I'd put into it!
Since I look at motors all day long, a really nice one is a pleasure!

Some of the guys here have as much work in the painting of their motors than most folks have in the paint jobs on the full bodied custom cars! They are real works of art!!!!

To answer your question, no, regular paint will not peel and flake off. Visit your local automotive paint store and ask them about the forumlas for engine paints. You'll learn they are the same as regular finish paints.

And for what it's worth, a smoothed block painted in matching body colors will not transfer heat as well as a rough cast finish painted in black.

Just as Mike said. I usually spray the block and heads with the same paint that is going on the body. It only comes off if I didn't get all the dirt or grease off first.
