Found my problems

The yoke on the diff is wallowed out. It hold the joint ok, bt when torgued up, it allows the cap to flex, crushing the rollers. I'll get another one tomorrow.

Also discovered my rear gears are not 3.08 as I had assumed. They are 2.53. Anyone got a set of 3.73 gears for a GM 8.5 ten bolt diff they want to trade or sell?

2.53 at 6000 RPM better hold on

I am amazed at how well the car launched with this short of a gear. The blower really carries it. I'm even more stoked about finding a 3.73. Ought to get better mileage at 60 mph than I do now. I am barely turning 1300 rpms at 60 mph in 4th. By the time she gets into the band of the cam, I'm doing 90 and scared to death on La roads.

I believe I need to change the carrier too if going up this big. I used to have a posi unit for the 10 bolter that I gave away years ago. Wish I still had it.

You called that gear short???? not a short gear but a tall gear, the bigger the numbers, the shorter the gear, like 512 is a really low gear...I run a total of 2.73 rear gear, (tall) if it needs more RPM down shift, you can drive all day in 2nd or 3rd gear if you want.. in that light of a car nothing even gets much of a work out... :)

Yer right of course, it is a tall gear. After that I respectfully disagree with you. I built the 700R4 so I could have a low first and a high 4th, with lock-up function for long cruises. I want to use all of the gears. 99% of the time I drive with the shiter in D. I didn't want a manual trans, wasn't interested in shifting all the time. I'd like to take full advantage of this configuration. BY installing a shorter gear, I increase the launch forces to a percentage greater than the gear ratio due to the reduction in first gear of the trans (at the same time increasing my smiles), and I can increase fuel economy on my top end by getting my motor out of the idle circuit(again, this makes me smile).

Sounds like a win win to me.

as long as ya gotta get a new yoke, why not upgrade to a 1350 yoke and u-joints? MUCH stronger. I got a 3.73 posi rearend out of my 70 Chevy pickup, but I am saving that for my 29 Sedan.

Good used Yoke from Pull-a-part, $10 and I can be on the road tonight. New 1350 Yoke, $90 and I have to wait until next week to get it.

On of my employee's dad is more than happy to let one of the axles he has behind his barn go if I take the whole thing. Already has 3.08 gear in it complete. Just an hour drive away.
