Fuel Gauge Problem

Zack

Well, another new problem. Now when i start the car the fuel needle jumps all over the place. When i rev it up it really goes beserk. At an idle it is pretty much normal. It appears to be showing the correct reading when it will be still long enough. Any ideas?

check your grounds from the sender all the way to the gauge body. a long jumper wire with alligator clips will help in this.

I know my memory isn't great, but isn't the feed from the gauge varying the ground impedance? Sounds more like a chafed wire [making ground] , I've been wrong many times...

The fuel gauge reads the ohms of resistance from the sender if either the wires or sender are bad it will cause things like this to happen. I would inspect the 2 wires from tank to gauge for loose connections to broken or fraid wires. I doubt its the sender they rarely go bad same with the gauge rarely goes bad. IMO I bet you got some kind of funky connection happening.

The fuel sender may be depending on the sender housing to make a ground with the fuel tank. Run a ground wire from the sender to your common ground on the frame. Hope that helps....
