How tall is too tall for a shifter?

It's time to replace the old B&M shifter and I like the looks of a tall shifter, but don't know how much is too much. Are there any ones from Lokar or Genie that work better in these buckets?

I have a Gennie mid-mount Ultra Swan Shifter w/23" stick and it works just fine for me. However, I'm kinda tall and have long arms. In "park", the stick is about 1 1/2" from the dash and the knob is about 5" above the dash. There are enough adjustments in the mount to move it fwd or aft about 6". The web site has installation instructions for each application.

Francis, that's why I was asking around, to see if some looked or worked better then others. That 23" Ultra Swan sounds about perfect, we've got a killer shift knob from McPhail and just above the dash is where I would like it to be. Thanks.

Here are the photos. 1st three are in "Park", then in "Dr", last in "1st" I prefer the Gennie shifter because I can use any shift knob without having to worry about a lockout button.

Not to purposely jack this thread but kinda related... I've got a fun question for the guys running manuals in their T. How tall is too tall, where it like to roll out of gear or into gear if idleing in netural. Reason I ask is saw a video of this happening was so messed up ruined the front of the T.

Gennie Shifter is pretty much out of business. There are some units still around at places like Streamline and others, but it is a strange situation there right now.

I had a 16 inch Lokar on my 23 and liked it that height, and my Son has a 12 inch Gennie on his rpu. My other Son has a longer (I think 23 inch) on his T bucket and he likes it because it is so tall. It did jump out of gear one time on him but after we tightened up the jam nuts that never happened again. If you get a Lokar, add the adapter so you can install a different knob. I had a large 8 ball on the 23 and it made changing gears so much easier.

Here is the one on my Kid's T bucket.

The 32 has a tall Lokar with a knob adapter. The only problem we have had with a heavy knob hitting a big dip or bump and it droping into 2nd gear. The first time it happened scared the crap out of me. I just up shift now if it happens. If you have a knob adapter you can just slide the knob off running down the interstate if you want. Tall shifters do vibrate if that is an issue for you.

I have a B&M street rod shifter and I believe it is 15". The biggest concern I see is if there is enough room when pulled back as well as steering wheel clearance. My Frank head would hit the steering wheel it was so close. I never had a problem with it but the wife complained it would squish her fingers when she was driving.

Read the post that Don wrote above and you should be able to cure the dropping into second gear problem.

The first time mine dropped down into second I thought the noise was a trailer truck passing me on I75, but it was my car revving up. There are two jam nuts under the boot and if you tighten those up until the shifter is stiffer to move fore and aft it will cure that problem. My Son's actually jumped from park to reverse and backed into another car (didn't even put a scratch on either one as his tires touched the front bumper), so we did the same tightening and that took care of it.

I had that problem when I had my big head on there. I have since replaced it with a smaller shifter knob and it doesn't do it anymore.
