Jag ring and pinion change

I'm going to find a 3.73 ring and pinion and pull it my self.

Can I use any dana 44 3.73 gears?

Chris, it's my understanding that you can use Dana 44 parts, but I don't know that for a fact. I do know that you need a "case spreader" to get the carrier out of and back into the case. I had to have my Jag diff rebuilt by a tranny shop because of that (they wouldn't lend out the tool).

You might post your question on Hotrodders.com in the Transmission - Rearend forum... there are some really sharp driveline guys that hang out there. You'll have to register to post, but it's free.

I'm not saying it's the same but, you're supposed to use a case spreader to do a GM 10or12 bolt, I have done a few [3 or 4] without . Have to talk to someone who's BTDT.

Oh. Joy. So going to the upull it and getting my own ring and pinion is out the question without buying the whole rearend.

I'll do some more research on this and post on Hotrodders.com a bit later.

Thank you.

Well, one of my buds over @ the HAMB said They did this......and/or what it curtains, who knows. Post over there and in a couple of other chat rooms....you might get some bites.
I've set up a couple of Jag rears, but I bet the go-to man here would be our Ted Brown! He'd know or one of his Mechanic buddys would.
One of his old cars had a tricked out Jag setup (I believe it was the cobra) and it would tote the front wheels coming out a tight curve on the road course where they really had to come on down, speed-wise. They'd hit the throttle and you could see daylight under the front wheels....... It was totally wicked!!!!!!!!!

On pg 166 of the Sep issue of Street Rodder, it shows how to make your own diff spreader. Real simple.

Ok, Not looking so bad on the tool problem. Making one is real easy.

One step down.

Mate Jag center is a Dana 44 so heaps of gear sets to suit. As for using a spreader - assuming you know how to set up pinion depth bearing pre-load (pinion) and crown wheel back-lash you can hook the hemisphere out with a piece of wood. Like wise 'coz you wont be messing with the bearings you can tap it back in using the same piece of wood as a drift. When I was a mechanic 25 years ago at least we had a spreader that was broken and our dealership was to tight to buy a new one so I did heaps like this.
Cheers
Tony

I'll have some one else rebuild mine.
I just want to go to the upull it to get the 3.73 gears.

Save a little money.
:)

Chris,
I know that this is not what you are looking for, but if someone is looking to build a pretty simple tool to spread the case on that type of rear end, this might be an idea. The rectangular bars with the peg in the middle bolt on where the cover does. The long bars with the holes on the end and the large center hole slip over the pin and apply the force to the case along the axis of the ring gear carrier. The tubes that the clevises slip into are not threaded and use the jam nuts to apply pressure to the unit. It would collapse into a small package for storage and would have a pretty good sized range for different rears.

oino they are interchangable between the jag and dana 44 also the power loc carriers, if you use a largere gear on the 2.88 carrier you need a shim to make it work, ie space out the crown wheel . i have a link to a site with the details on it but can not work out how to paste the link here.
