Lincoln IRS

Has anyone ever messed with a 90S Lincoln IRS ? I have access to one and think it would be a likely candidate for a bucket. I know ya cant put a lot of hp in front of them but an 8.8 ford isn't a bad rearend just didn't know how the u joints hold up???

Before I built my 27T I considered a Cobra replica [too much $$$$$]. Those guys use high HP engines in those cars and many use a Ford 8.8 IRS from Lincolns since they have the aluminum center section. Here is a quote from one of their forums regarding a Lincoln 8.8 IRS. This related to street cars, not race cars.

I know about a dozen guys running IRS with over 450 ft-lbs of torque with no problems. So the strength in cars that weigh this little just isn't an issue

Thanks, I don't plan on a lot of weight and as long as the tires aren't real sticky I should be good. It wont be a drag car just a toy.

IDK if the Lincoln unit is the same as the Mustang Cobra / Thunderbird / Cougar version. I am sure the center section is the same but control arms may very. Factory Five has a setup for them where you may be able to get some parts. As far as tough, there is larger shafts and cv joints available because there are a lot of high hspr cobra Mustangs out there beating on them. I am sure in a light weight T they would be fine.

FYI, the Cobra units have an aluminum center and the Tbirds were iron.

If anyone gets far enough along and need the alum center section, complete with gears from the 99 cobra, I have a couple lying around. They are complete from Ford. My 99 cobra had an unacceptable vib at 2000 rpm in 5th gear. Ford sent out new center sections for every car that had the problem. The dealership was scrapping them, along with the T-45 trans, driveshaft, half shafts, stainless exhaust, etc. The chunk comes with 3.27 gears, traction lock, 28 spline side gears.

Thanks for the input guys, I am going to go ahead and pick it up. I can get the whole car for scrap price so i will strip a few things and go ahead and scrap it.
