Maybe a dumb steering wheel question

Could be a dumb question. I don't know! :jawdrop: I just received my steering column and it is just the straight no frills column with detachable steering hub. No wires in it for anything. Will a steering wheel work on this without the adapter kit? :fidget: Won't the horn button just snap on? Maybe place a spring behind the horn button to keep it from rattling.

What do ya think? Am I right or full of beans? :fidget:

Thanks Guys

I'll make a couple of assumptions here..... a good way to make an ...... out of you and me.

Yes, the steering wheel will bolt on. This advances the assumption the bolt patterns are the same. If they're not, it won't.

The horn button can be backed up by a spring to prevent rattling as you mentioned and don't worry about isolating the button from ground contact since you said there weren't any wires in the column anyway.

I have an adaptor to fit my steering wheel to the quick release hub, but it's only because I made the steering wheel long before I bought the QR hub. I haven't addressed the horn situation yet. I'm leaning towards making a slip ring arrangement for electrics in the column. If I were able to drive the car today, I'd have to lean out around the windshield and yell beep because there aren't any wires in my column either.

Sorry, Ted. Didn't mean to upset ya. :suicide:

I don't think you really upset me, as much as I thought you would be able to figure all that out without any outside help, as there will be a lot of those times during a complete build... BUT!!! I did say people that did not know better, so how are you supposed to learn??? if not by asking dumb (sounding ) questions,,, I sometimes forget just how many of those I myself asked so many years ago... SORRY for not just answering your question, like some did for me... I am old and grumpy now and then, Please don't take it personal...

There is no such thing as a stupid question! Only some ignorant answer from someone who takes the time to belittle the person that ask. That same person could have answered the question but instead tries to make a fool of somebody. I thought the purpose of internet forums was to spread knowledge not try to belittle another! NONE of us always knew this stuff, and NONE of us know it all.
Though some think they do.

if the steering wheel and column have the standard 3 bolt trianglur pattern then they should work. If you can find a cheap Grant steering wheel adaptor at a swap meet or someplace get the horn plate, spring and top cap out of the kit and use that. Might also use the round transision piece that goes under the steering wheel to the coumn. Don't need no wires or nuttin. Can run a horn button on the dash or someplace.

Good answer, I myself do not use a chrome horn cap/cover to hide the three holding bolts, I use Allen studs in place of the three 1/4" bolts, and use dome nuts on the top where they show, the 1/2" center nut is also a dome nut, just a different look, as the horn cap looked a bit modern to me at the time. :)
