Since I wanted to run a narrow nose, I needed a "narrow" engine. Originally I wanted to run an Oldsmobile Quad 4, but the expense and lack of a RWD application for this engine, made my rethink my approach. I had some experience with the Chevy V6 60 degree engine back in the 80's so that became my choice. I located a brand new 2.8 S-10 engine on Craigslist for $75 (of course it was near Oklahoma City!) and arranged for a friend of mine to pick it and the T5 Camaro transmission and bellhousing (it was in Oklahoma City) up for me. Turns out the engine is actually a 3.1 litre that GM let Isuzu use in the Rodeo. It complicated things a little, but i figured a way to solve the problems.
1. The starter is on the drivers side of the engine, solved this problem by using a starter from a Fiero V6. Luckily for me, the Camaro V6 bellhousing is clearanced for starters on either side, not sure why GM did this, I'm just thankfull they did.
2. The engine mounts are not even close to being symetrical, since i had to fabricate the mounts anyway, just took a little more time as both sides are different distances from the rear of the engine and none of the frame mounts could be made identical.
I'm going to run an internal hydraulic throwout bearing and acuate it with a Wilwood 3/4 master cylinder. Currently I'm trying to locate a tailhousing of a T5 transmission from a Chevy Astro or GMC Safari van as it moves the shifter location forward about 4 inches.
