New Starter Question

Its time to get a new starter. Every 20-30 starts the starter wont start first turn. So i figured its only going to get worst and worst and then go. How do I know if I need the 153 tooth or 168 tooth starter? Thanks

Do you mean the starter won't engage, won't spin , ???? Many of the aftermarket starters are drilled for both size flywheels . dave

It just makes a noise then you turn the key back to off position then try again and it starts. I went onto summits website and they are asking for specific one when narrowing down the search

Before you spend money on a starter , you'd better pull yours and check the flywheel teeth.. sorry dave

go to speedway, search afco starter, I'm on 11 years , has worked flawlessly . dave

Sorry tyus got ahead of myself , when you say "noise
' do you mean click -click, or grind , if it's a grinding sound , then check the flywheel [ although I'd do that anyway} , if it's just clicking, could be just a bad solenoid , loose starter cable or electrical gremlin . let us know quote name='Dave' timestamp='1306190295' post='135051']

Sounds like your solenoid. Cheap and easy to replace.

As for your current starter, check the bolt pattern, some blocks (like mine) are only drilled for the staggered bolts. Most of the mini starters you see listed on summit are only for straight bolt pattern. Oh yeah, I do not know a quick way to know the number of teeth. I just counted 1/4 of the teeth and multiplied by 4.

What type of starter are you running now?

If you are running a stock type GM starter and have the staggered bolt pattern, then you have a 168 tooth ring gear. If you have the straight across bolt pattern you have a 153 tooth ring gear. This only works out for stock type starters, with after market or mini starters there is no standard.

+1 on replacing the solenoid on the starter you have.

Mike

After checking what has been mentioned, if you find it to be the starter I would take it to an electric shop that rebuilds starters and alternators and have it rebuilt. It sounds to me like you may have a bad bearing that lets the armature drag.
