The wifes puter. When you go to Google and search it provides a page of results just like normal. When you click on a line of results. It then redirects you to some garbage site. It does this all the time every search. If you click on one of the favorites that has been saved it works just fine. So it has SpyBot in it and AVG. Went to run SpyBot and it comes up and says error. Same with the AVG. It won't lets us run any of the virus software. OK so I am going to restore the disc to an earlier date, won't let you do that either.

Any of you computer guys got any ideas with out spending a fortune to get rid of what ever got in this thing?

If your running windows, what version of Internet explorer are you using or are you using firefox? You seem somewhat computer literate... have you tried deleting your cookies and cache lately? You could also install Ad-Aware, you can get that off of lavasoft.com or download.com. Sounds to me like spyware/adaware/malware issue. In additon, make sure that those programs are update along with windows update(assuming that you are on a windows box).

I have known quite a few people lately that have gotten the Antivirus 2009 installed on their computer, it seems to be going around lately.

When the Bogus anti virus spyware hit me it killed the restore points and wouldn't let me go where I wanted. I had to take mine in to get debugged.

if AVG is updated, it should kill the Antivirus 2009... in addition to that, if you look in the task manager you need to make sure that "a.exe" and an "mscvt.exe" isnt running... also open "msconfig" and make sure that those two processes arent going to run at startup.... that is how i killed that virus on a couple computers and havent had any issues since

A good place to go when you're infected is Trend Micro House Call you can run a free online virus and spyware scan there. They will clean up any crap they find and what they can't clean up they will tell you how to fix.

Ron,

Sorry to hear about your troubles. This is the main reason I started using Linux as my primary desktop since 1996!

If it was my machine, this is what I would do. I would remove the infected hard drive from the machine. Then depending on whether the drive is ide or sata, I would use one of my adapters to attach it to a usb port of another good windows machine. It's sort of like hooking it up like an external drive, but instead of inside a nice fancy case, the drive is just sitting bare on top of the desk. Be careful, the drives are a little fragile.

Once the infected drive is plugged in and powered, the good windows machine should see it and assign it a drive letter. Then run the anti-virus software on the good machine against the old infected drive to clean it up.

You can pick up the little cable adapters to hook just about any hard drive to a usb port pretty cheap. Here is an example of one that will connect any 3.5" or 2.5" ide/sata drive to a usb port:
USB 2.0 to SATA + IDE (2.5 / 3.5 / 5.25") Cable Adapter 2020

You might even have a local Mom/Pop computer store in the area that will stock the adapter cables.

Sorry again for your troubles.

David

Step ONE

STOP USING INTERNET EXPLORER. Sorry, habit.

Download and install Spyblaster

Works great, less filling.

This will not fix your problem but should (be one of the things that will) prevent it from happening again.

Ron, I emailed you detailed intructions how you might be able to resolve the issue.

Seriously folks, you should install several browsers and get accustomed to doing different things. Much like removing your shoes to get on a plane, there are certain steps you can take that are are only a slight inconvenience, to prevent something like this from infecting your browser.

I use Firefox and an extention called NoScript. I also have SpyBlaster installed and updated for all browsers installed (and I have several).

I use the previously described items along with Pest Patrol, AVG, Spybot Search and Destroy, Lavasoft's ADAWARE.

As mentioned before I have several browsers installed. Safari from Apple, Chrome from Google, Firefox and an older version of Mozilla, Opera, Ghostzilla, and of course the EVIL EVIL Internot Exploder.

i've been using this setup for a while and although it can be bothersome to have to allow scripts for each page I visit I feel it's a small price to pay to keep crap from getting installed.

Come on now T-odd... why would someone go to MAC when they can go to best buy and get all the kewl stuff on windows from best buy or what ever store(with warranty and support contract)... Most people dont care about all that stuff because all they want to do is check email and minimal stuff... I do this stuff on a daily basis and i switch between internet explorer and firefox depending on what site i go to. Those two are sufficient for me. I dont knock macs because they are good pc's but i dont do all that graphic stuff so i dont really see a need to own one. Im a windows administrator so I try to keep to bill gates even tho i was cussing him two weeks ago because his software crashed on one of my servers. They all have their issues and I just tend to them as they come.*shrugs*

**hyjack**
Why switch between the two just find ietab for firefox, this will end your need for ie.

I agree (Ctr+T Works without that tab), The only thing I dont like about Firefox is the latency... other then that its great!

Speaking of HiJack... HiJackThis is a great program to pretty much fix anything!!!!!;) Problem with that is, not many people know how to read the log thats created when its ran.

I will try this place you posted up about. One of my lap tops wont let me sign on to the net via wireless. But if I hard lined it NP.

Never really had any problems with Malware and Spyware. I run my defrag program once a week. + a Ascentive program that I got from Finallyfast.com seems to be keeping my desk top and my other lap top in fine working order.
