rear Leaf spring problems

I have a rear leaf problem and I bought rear leafs from posie, does anyone have an idea on how many leafs to take out? The leafs I bought are super tight and posie did tell me that they are made for a heavier car, and I will have to remove some of the leafs, but I don't know how many I should start with. Thanks

I would try 3 leafs to start with... Just remember, the shorter the spring, the choppier the ride... Those are built almost like trailer springs, only with sliders... I would only use tapered spring stock from old thinner leaf springs if short springs are all you can do... Use that main leaf, if you must, and change all the rest... Just me here... :)

Hi Ted,
Thanks for the quick reply.
My perch measurements are 46" and I believe that the old leafs are to long as my shackles are almost stright down. My friend and I thought that 3 leafs to start with would be good. I just don't want to do this a bunch of times to get a better ride.
Regards,
Rick

Well if the shackles are hanging straight down now, they will only get worse with less leafs, and that is not a good thing, as the frame will swing in/on the shackles, and then a Panard bar (as long as possible) would have to be used, I would make a new main leaf "shorter" but only after you find the RIDE you like, then you will know just how long to make the main leaf... PLUS! it is worth all the time it takes to get a great ride, take it from me on this... Nothing worse than a rough riding Hot rod, the Ladies hate that, and it ends up breaking all sorts of things on your car... :)

Hi Ted,
The brackets are 46" long, the old leafs that are on my bucket now measure approx 45". The new leafs are 40" and wit the shacles they measure approx 44" so I will have 2" to lift the springs up to the new shackles, which is what posies recommend in order the make the shackles work properly. Right now my old shackles hang stright down which gives me no flex.
I took my car out to a car show last night and the ride is very rough. Hopefully, we will get the new leafs on this week end.
I know About breaking stuff from the rough ride, things shake loose all the time, plus my wife is none to happy either.
Regards,
Rick

Bruce,
Thanks for the info. I looked for a t leaf and couldn't find any. So the next best thing was to order one from posies. I hope it will soften the ride some.
Thanks for your info.

Rick

Ted,
When I take out the 3 leafs I will also have to put a shim in. I don't know if the shim will go on top or on the bottom of the leafs. I guess I have to do this because I will run out of threads on my center bolt.
Thanks
Rick

Put the shims on the top of your spring stack. If you want to lower your car a bit in the back you could put them on the bottom but if your car is already set up that usually means other thing need to be changed too.

Your Posie spring would benefit from the mods in that artical too. Posie uses a higher spring rate that the stock Model A.

Ron,
Thanks for the info. The leafs have a reverse eye in them, so I think it will lower the car some. But, I'm still toying with the idea of putting the shims under the leafs to make it even lower.

Thanks for the reply.....have a great day
Rick
