Reman Carb

Opinions, please. Do you fellas think it would be okay to go with a reman carb vs a brand new carb. A whole lot cheaper for sure! I'm looking at edelbrock 600cfm with elec choke.

Thanks

I don't see anything wrong with a reman. That is what I would do. I'm running a used carb off of my Blazer.

Edelbrock does some of their own remans and they are as good as their new ones. I'm going with an ugly old Q-jet that I'm rebuilding this afternoon.

Something I learned about rebuilding carbs... You know that gold color they have? If you boil them out with carb cleaner, or as I like to use, Lacquer thinner, that gold stuff gets washed off. Then, they might leak. Turns out the pot metal is somewhat pourous, and that gold color isn't just for color, it also seals them up. Some of the new fuels can melt that sealer away too, so if you happen to get a partiuclarly pourous casting, you may find it leaks after your rebuild. Some rebuilders don't even reseal them, but Edelbrock does a good job of it. (I've had outstanding luck with a couple of rebuilt Q-jets from them.) The moral is: be careful what you clean a carb with. I think someone sells a spray on sealer, just don't remember who... (CRS)...

On power block TV episode 418 They rebuild a Q-jet. It's pretty much the same thing I've been doing since 1969 and out of several hundred I've never had a leakage problem. I've seen ethanol trash the composite floats and mush the gaskets and wreck the accelerator pump, but the basic carb was still rebuildable.

I've never seen one of Edelbrock's reman carbs. I've gone through enough of the Holley remans to know I wouldn't give you a plugged nickel for one of them.

Ask yourself this question. If a carb company is in the business of selling new carbs, what is the source of the reman carbs they are selling. Oh, wait. I forgot about all the warranty problems and assembly line screw-ups they've tried to patch up for resale.

The best cold soak carb cleaner I've ever found is CRC's Tyme. It's not cheap, but it's worth every last cent. I've never had a carb casting leak after being cleaned in it, but it would sure find the leaks in a Q-Jet secondary metering well welch plug in a New York minute. It would clean the gum the other cleaners couldn't touch.

Both the 500's on my '27 are Edelbrock remans. I've had to go through both of them and by the time I spent the $ for the rebuild kits, it wasn't worth the savings. Next time I'll buy new or buy a used one cheap and just rebuild it.

10-4 on CRC's Tyme. only stuff I use

That's the way it was on the Holley remans.

Rule No. 1 - You get what you pay for.

Mike is 100% completely right!
