Retiring

Well, guys I dropped a big bomb on the Fire Chief Wednesday and told him I had decided to hang it up come the end of the year. Being we work well together it was kind of like I punched him in the gut.

However, 29 yrs. is enough. Politics has sucked all the fun out this job but it's been a good run too.

It'll sure be nice not to have to get up and go to the station on Jan. 2, '09.:hooray:

I'm sad in a way as we have the best people but life is too short. Gotta do what's best for me.

So, next year I fiind something else to do to supliment the pension (maybe something automotive) and heck, maybe have more time to putz with the bucket and meet up with you guys somewhere!

AC Jim

My boss says I retired a couple of years ago... I just didn't leave! :hooray:

Congrats on your retirement, I'm jealous. I still have three years until I'm eligible to retire, but not sure I'll be able to afford it. Might have to get a job at the local auto parts house. Naw, that wouldn't make sense... I would actually know something about cars, unlike most of the counter monkeys these days. If you don't have a year-make-model, they can't look it up in the computer!

Umm, what were we talking about... oh yeah, happy retirement!

I only have another 30 years left tell I am done. But, I spend all my money on speed parts and other hot rod crap. I'll work till I die I guess but at least I'll have cool cars the whole time.

Congrats on the permanent vacation.

I always tell people " I was tired yesterday, and retired today ". :hooray:

Congratulations. I gotta tell you though, retirement isn't all it's cracked up to be. I was forced to take early retirement last year when my company got bought out, and I really, really hate it.

I've worked hard all my life, and enjoyed it. Now I don't have anywhere in particular to be, so I go to bed at 2-4 AM and get up around 10 or so. Then I watch the court shows on TV until the end of the day, when my Son and I go to the shop because it cools off enough to get some work done. I kinda feel like I've lost purpose in life, I don't interface with people on a daily basis, and I have aged 5 years in the last one year! As soon as the economy turns and my industry rebounds (I was in the boating business) I plan to return to work. I have some promises, but things are just dead right now.

You mention you want to do some other work, that is great. I think once you get a little while of laying around you will be like me, chomping at the bit to get back to a productive life. But enjoy it for a little while. :hooray::)

Don

Congrats! Enjoy your free time, you earned it. As for what to do? Sit down and make a list of things you'd like to do. Then, smile at the fact that you have all those choices and all the time you need to do them.:hooray:

AKA "The Bucket List" !!! :hooray:

But seriously though... enjoy your time and make the most of it! I in theory should retire in 9 years... reality??? probably never will as 3 ex-wives, 1 current wife, and a child from each will keep me pumping out green till they take me away...

I retired from the military in 1988. I was much too young to retire for good and I worked up until I quit my last job a year ago. This past year has had it's rough periods as everything went up but my retired pay. My next T-bucket is going ot remain in the planning stages until finances are resolved. I've applied and interviewed for a part time job. Part time is all I want. I will start drawing my social security in 6 months. Whether I continue working part time will depend on my mood and how well I can get through my projects on the two retirement incomes.

I know what you mean Don about too much free time on your hands and no purpose. I have a hard time getting to bed before 1 or 2 in the morning and on the mornings like today when I got up a 6:30 I know a nap will be happening sometime today when I should really be out doing something constructive. Sometimes it's easier just to go to bed. Steve

Wow that all sounds familiar. I left the Military in 2000 after 11 years, 1 bad jump, 12 hours of surgery and 13 months of recovery I was told thanks for your time.

We then moved up to Canada (where the wife is from) that 1st year I could not work or go to school due to Immigration. The first month or so was alright time to wind down, come to terms etc etc. After that, after doing things 5 days a week then not being able to do ANYTHING. You go batty. I drove the other half nuts and basically mopped around the house for a year.

If you have a plan and something to do you will be fine. Enjoy your retirement, just keep busy!!!

When I retired I decided to make retirement a career, meaning I knew it would be something I would have to work on in order to make it enjoyable. The way I see it retirement is my second career. Now I really don't know how I ever had time to work.

I look forward to retirement (2 more years). I have so many hobbies that I doubt I'll ever get bored. I'm sick of my job and look forward to getting out of it (school teacher). My biggest problem is I HATE being on someone else's clock all the time. No matter how interesting or fulfilling a job is, I eventually get to hating the daily obligation. When I retire from teaching, I will probably work somewhere part-time to pay for my hobbies and help with insurance, but at least I won't be stuck doing the same crap day in and day out...

Great concept, I've heard it put like that from others too. Scarey thing is making sure there is enough $ to pay for health care, rising costs of living and still have plenty left over for toys.

I've only been retired for a month now, but i gotta tell ya, I'm lovin' it. We were working 50 to 57 hours a week most of the time. This didn't leave much time to play so things just kept piling up. Now when I walk into the shop it's like where do I start today. Seriously, I tell myself each and every day has to account for something. That's what keeps me going.

Ron

Congrats on your announcement. Just under 4 yrs to go here. The guys that retired or are just about to, are without question an inspiration. By dragging my butt into work every day plus being hounded at home, I can't seem to find enough time to scratch, nevermind making any progress on this project.

All the best to you when that day finally comes.

Congrats Jim, by the way I'm jealous. I have 2 more years before I can retire and get out of Vegas. :welcome:

Well Bruce, hurry up and come on the SC. We'll drink beer, duck hurricanes, and monkey with T-buckets! :welcome:
