While I was playing with my alum. pile I thought I build a shifter that was smaller then the ones you can buy.
Here are the assorted parts.

Used spring loaded bearings for detents(real small ones) still working on the lockout.
 
Will be anxious to see how you do with this. I have a C3 trans in my car and cannot find a replacement (and no one makes one) so may need to make my own.
 
I built one like it out of stainless and put detents in with lock outs. Have to lift up on lever to change detents.
 
I used to have a similar homemade shifter:

The lever moved a rod to a bellcrank under the floor, and a rod from there to the tranny. Built it from scraps. Worked fine, the tranny has the detents. No lockouts, of course. Just 4 positions: Drive at top, then Neutral, Reverse, and Park at bottom.
