Years ago I was pretty good at math, but not anymore! So the question is, my odometer reads .8 mile on a one mile measured course, so is the speedometer reading high or low?
Low...the speedo reading is just the time derivative of the odo reading, and basic differential calculus tells us that the derivative is a positively related function of the variable, therefore it moves in the same direction. I had this same discussion with Steven Hawking just last week...
More simply put... If your odometer is reading low, so is your speedometer. When your speedo reads 40 you are actually going 50! Maybe you have a 3.00 gear in the rear end, but the speedometer gear in the trans is calibrated for a 3.50. (This is just an example because I have no idea what you actually have.) Take the speedo gear out and look for one with fewer teeth. If your speedometer has an electric sender it just needs recalibration.
Have you seen the GPS speedometers? No sending units and no calibration. They have them in all kinds of sizes and faces as well as different speed ranges.
I don't have no steenkin' speedometer in my T. I just memorized a few tach-speedo pairings. 2000 RPM is 50 MPH, etc. I saw a tach at a cruise this year and the guy had put some little stick-it numbers on it for 30, 50, etc. MPH.
