Is it possible to have just a rod or shaft hook up to a steering wheel and then to a corvair with just a rod and not a whole column..if so what would I need on both ends? Thanks guuys..I've seen it done before but can't find parts

They do that in race cars to save weight. You will have to fab some brackets and supports to hold that shaft steady. Use a quick disconnect for the wheel. Then use a ujoint to connect to the box.

By the time you do all that, you might as well have a column

Need to use at least 2 pillow blocks mounted at the dash and firewall IMO. Speedway's racing catalogs show pictures.

Yep, my 23 was done like that and so is my Son's rpu. Just a pillow block at the firewall and a rod end or some sort of support at the dash. Works great and frees up some foot room because of the shaft being thinner than a column.

You need to find a Corvair box that has the long shaft in it. They are about 48" long. The worm gear is actually part of that shaft. They can be reversed just like any other Corvair box. So now you just need to support that rod up near the wheel. Cut the shaft to length and weld on a a quick disconnect for the wheel. No need for a ujoint or a lower support.
That shaft is 5/8"

The steering box out of a 90's VW bus works great also. Also has the shaft as part of the worm gear. No reversal required.

Adam: Where are you located? I have one of those long Corvair units for $100. but it would be heck to ship even though it's light.
