Titles in Tennessee

Has anybody in TN titled a bucket since the "sema" legislation has passed? I bought a body only from
Speedway, built my own frame from scratch, and bought engine and trans from a buddy. I did not get a Manufacturers statement of origin when i bought the body and have contacted them for one by email but so far no response. What documentation is needed? With my past experiences with the DMV and trying to obtain titles, i would like to know as much as possible before i go in there. Thanks, Bill

I am in the exact same boat as you are except i am here in Texas. I have all the engine numbers from 1923 and i thought of going down and registering my car with one of those that i picked at random. Not sure if that would work or not but just short of paying 300-500 dollars to a title company i don't know what else to do.

As far as the SEMA legislation goes. A SEMA rep just emailed me back and said that is has not been passed yet for Texas. I'm not real up on the SEMA Bill but i hope it goes thru.

I held off building my bucket three years until SEMA past here in Washington State last October. I just didn't want to get caught with a lot of $ in a T kit not having a old title and having a glass body and all.

Thank God I live in Florida!

Jim

Texas has passed the Street Rod bill using the SEMA text. It's house Bill 890 and was signed by the Gov. last year. The problem is the TXDOT hasn't implemented it because funding. I'm sure if you pushed it they'd bend.

You definitely don't want to get caught with purchased title. It's not worth it.

It may take time, here in Washington State the bill was passed last spring and it took until Oct. 1 to implement it.

I've been waiting to see how it would go in little old Lewis County first, then might give it a test in Shelby County in a couple of years. Memphis is not going to be fun no matter WHEN you go, but I figured I would give them a few years to get a couple of requests out of the way first.

I don't even know how to begin asking for a title based on the SEMA legislation information I have.

We wish it would be as simple as, "Look here, I got this car and I need a title. It most closely resembles a 1923 Ford. How much do I write the check for please?"

BUT I know it won't go like that...

People here in Washington State are now retitling already built kit cars so they too can be emission exempt. there was some confusion between Washington State DOT and the State Patrol whom does the vehicle inspections. For already titled cars wanting emission exemption the State Patrol merely does a quick inspection that only checks the VIN-- then you can go get your plates and change the title. The title will then state the year the body most resembles ie 1966 Cobra Replica or 1923 Model T Street Rod. Also, allowed no fenders if not driven in rain, one can even have the blue dot tail lights, but for some odd reason this state still requires 2 windshield wipers on all vehicles delivered after 1938, but I hear they even are relaxing that one if you get the right inspector. I'll have my experience to tell in about a month when I can get a sunny day to go down for the inspection.
