Advise on MIG welding please

Gerry, Windex is an ammonia-based window cleaner. That will likely cause Health & Safety to keep it off the shelves over there. You might try Asda, but I wouldn't hold my breath on finding it. It's water, alcohol and ammonia, so you know H&S would scream like a mashed cat if they tried to market it there.

For those here in the States, things happen a bit differently in the (dis)United Kingdom. They actually want to ban the sale of pointed kitchen knives, over there. Another one I hear they're working on is the necessity to hire an electrician to replace a bad electrical outlet. If you think we have restrictive laws and ordinances here, you need to spend a few weeks in England, Ireland or Scotland to see what restrictive really means. Then again, the Irn-Bru sold here in the US is different from what is sold over there. A couple of the food colorings used over there have been identified as carcinogens over here. Canada won't allow either caffeine or quinine in the Irn-Bru sold there. So we all have our crazy laws.

Ah I see you know our islands.
As you know I worked 20 years in Health and safety and some of the things that you can have in your kitchen or bathroom cabinet are banned in the workplace. We also 'should' get an electrician to carry out any work in our homes as we should get a qualified and approved person to service our heating boiler. plus you need to get an approved person to carry you shopping if its too heavy. Limit here is 25Kg. After that legally you are not allowed to lift it. It just goes on and on. Like a lot of guys I did an apprenticeship and there is no way the government is going to tell me how to service my boiler or put in a power outlet.
And you are correct. ammonia based cleaners are not available here, but they are in Spain... go figure.
Also just so you guys in the US know how bad it is. Any knife over 3'' long can get you a prison sentence. People who carry small knives in case they need to cut a safety belt have been summonsed to appear before the courts and have been fined with a prison record to boot.
They are also looking at non emission controlled cars and banning them from cities. You would need to register a trip and have a reason for that trip to be able to go on the road.
What more can i say, Its a world gone mad
G

And can you believe (horror of horrors) I actually have multiple 110 V AC outlets in my bathrooms? :wow:

I get a kick out of the knife laws. Take a look at this image, taken in Lanark, Scotland -

That is me on the right and yes, that is a 14" dirk, sharpened on both sides no less, hanging at my left hip. I can legally carry it in Scotland when I am kilted. You should see the TSA people's eyes open up when I tell them there's a dirk in my checked luggage. :winkn: The sheath has a courtesy tie on it, to indicate a lack of intention to draw the dirk, so I tie that and then double wrap the whole shebang in bubble wrap, to prevent it from getting loose and carving up a baggage handler.

"Good morning sir and welcome to the Glasgow airport for your departing flight. Might I ask if there are any weapons in your bags?"

"Yes, you may ask and yes, there certainly are."

That usually backs them up a step or two before they ask the next question.

Apologies for the thread drift.

The two Rons say MIG it. I ain't done as much welding tanks as they have but If I had a TIG that is what I would use. I modified an offroad rear sump Ford 460 oilpan into a flat bottom gated and baffled oilpan for my jetboat. I did not know about RPM's secrets of tank welding and did not make one pass. I made many tacks then stich welded 180 across from each other. After I finished I had beucoup leaks when I water tested it. After about 10 repairs and retests I finally got no leaks. If I were to try another one I would like to try Ron's way, or just TIG it.
