The wooden jig is definitely superior to the string or tape-and-square method, but this is just as easy. Take a level or tape which has a laser leveler and mount it on a short board so you can lay it along the tire and project it on a wall. Measure the distance to the wall and the laser dots and do the math.
Those gadgets are useful for more than leveling picture frames!
