I'm considering a trip to the Bonneville Speed Week (8/10-16) this year. Having never been, any information and tips on hotels, where to go, what to see, "don't miss" attractions in the area (including Salt Lake city/Park City area), etc. would be much appreciated. Also, what are the best 2-3 days of the week to spend on the salt?

You'll probably want to stay in Windsor but make sure that it is on the Nevada side as the Utah side is very poor. All the accommodations there are great and there is plenty of night life also. You will be only a couple of miles from "the end of the road" which is where you get on the salt.

I ran a car there in '09 and had a great time. When we got there the flats were completely under water due to an unseasonable amount of rain. We could not run on the first day but we were able to pass tech. By the second day we were able to get on the salt but were not able to run for the first half of the day due to technical difficulties because of the rain. Finally got to experience my first run later in the day and what an experience it was. There was about as much traction as driving on a snow covered street and being originally from Northeast Ohio, I know whereof I speak.

Since that time, the car has been redone and competes on the East Coast Timing Association strip where it runs B/Altered Gas Coupe. It set a record in at 188.231 on 5/14/11.

I go every year and I Stay in Tooele UT, have relatives there. Finding a room in Wendover may be hard at this late date - I would bet most rooms are taken for speed week. You can try Tooele UT or Wells NV - They are around 100 miles from the salt but will have rooms. Of course some folks stay in RV's close to the salt - it is dry camping and has a night show all it's own with people watching. The camp spot is the bend of the road down from the truck stop - showers available at truck stop.
Bring very dark sunglasses - I wear my auto dark glasses with dark clip-ons. Use high SPF sun screen and chap stick. I recommend a wide brim hat to cover your head that shades your ears - ears can get fried bad. Lots of water - the salt and sun will suck the water out of everything. I bring a pop-up sun shade, chairs, ice chest etc. Also remember it gets hot during the day, but nights can get chilly.
Contact me if you wish and I maybe able to answer your questions.

I think there are plenty of rooms during the week. Don't tell them you are a racer and you get a better price. Call and ask about entertainment in the casino in Windover (Peppermill I think) when you make reservations. If you wear shorts, be sure they are long. The reflection off the salt can sunburn you where you have NEVER been sunburned before! DON'T ASK!

I went in 2008 . had a fab time . We had a RV , stayed at the end of the road on the salt ,want into Wendover at night to eat in the casino, then on to one of the hotels where all the rods go. We got there on the Sunday afternoon and left on Thursday after noon for Pleasanton and the Good Guys western Nat's. Then fly home to the U.K. from San Francisco, see Alcatraz and the Sea Lions laying on the wharf thay must of bin 10.foot long There was some Ts driving around on the salt . We got a push bike ( bicycle ) to ride around the pit and when we went home we bort it home with us on the plain . Took lode of picks . There was a car powered by elastic bands built by a university ? All good stuff . We had a great time . Want to go again some day

Thanks for the advice. Right now it looks like all the nicer hotels - important to my right-seater - are full. I'll keep checking but it looks like we'll have to pass this year and start planning earlier next year.
