Brass Radiator Polish

I just had my radiator boiled and repaired and it came back gray and ugly. I need to polish it back to origional. I do not have a clue so i'm looking for some help.
I did a search and found nothing.
Thank you
Terry.

I like Zep 5 Star polish (Amazon.com)

I think that FleaBay has elbow polish on offer this week

"Brasso" About the best brass polish there is. When I was in the Navy, bosuns mates used it to polish brass. If you've ever been on a ship, you now how much brass they have. Comes in a bottle and is a thick liquid. Put some on a cloth, rub it on, let dry to a haze and wipe off. It'll give you something to do on a lazy afternoon.

After all the work it will take to make it shine, I would be looking for something to keep it that way. I have heard of something called Sharkskin or something close to that and bought some, but have not used it yet.

good luck,

Just an update. The oxidation was so bad I had to use Scottbight pads on my right angle air grinder to get to the brass. This removed splattered solder as well. Thats the good news, the bad news is there are scratches and swirls i now have to remove. I am doing this with
wet/dry sand paper and water. The moral of the story is next time just repair it. I hope this saves some one else the grief.

SOS pads! the SOS brand steel wool with the blue soap in it works wonders! also if you put the wet dry sand paper on a orbital sander works well :)
but nothing beats a polish wheel and compound.

I am sure you are up to your elbows with the sandpaper job by now, but Harbor Frght sells some buffing wheels and various shapes of pads that will fit in your drill. Also, you will be surprised how fast some soft metal rouge will get out scratches and leave a brilliant shine.
All this work, more reason to preserve you work with a protectant. How about some pics, showing how proud you are of your work.

Here is a picture along with a new question. I would like to use a standard fan but only have 6" from fan hub to water inlet. The radiatoe sets down one inch and i would like to raise it up so the bottom of the radiator is flush with the frame rail. Will this look ok?

Before I put the final polish on the brass, I would tape it off and shoot the fins in flat black. Looking good dude. Personally I would run a thin electric fan with maybe a black shroud to cover it from the sides, but respecting your car, I think you can get a pump mounted fan in the 6 inches. Most of it will be toward the rear of the pulley flange. You will have to make the call on raising the radiator. I would stand from the side and make sure it does not exceed the height of the firewall, although I have not heard any rules regulating a builders taste. More than likely you will need to run a shroud and I think it would look better. I cut about a 2 inch strip from some sheet alum and formed a circle that would clear the fan diameter by about 3/4 of an inch, watch for engine torque, pop riveted the overlapped ends and used some el brackets to attach it to the rad. I split a piece of vacuum hose and put on the edge near the radiator with glue and attached some chrome door edge guard to the engine edge of the shroud. You will need to super glue the door edge. Mine finally came off, no glue. I engine turned the alum while it was flat, but with the brass rad, I think flat black would better contrast.

I think what you're saying is you'll have to use smaller than a 12" dia. fan , right? Gonna be pretty hard to keep things cool w/that small a fan. Might be better to go electric [I know . not traditional:sleep:] but ... "form follows function" in my book..

I always use black dye rather than paint. You can get stuff that disolves in either water or alcohol, and I think it leaves a thinner coat which means less insulation, better cooling.

409T do you have a name for this dye?

It comes in powder form, and all I have is stuff that I have already mixed with liquid. I threw away the empty bottle that the powder came in, so I don't have a label to read. It's just black dye that is typically used for staining wood. I get it at Rockler Woodworking and Hardware, I'm sure they sell it online as well.

I found a tube of metal polish I bought at a car shoe a couple of years ago. It's made in Germany and called DURSOL. EDEL-CHROMGLANZ
It says it's for cleaning and polishing all metals. I just tried a small area and WOW! I post some pictures saterday.

I was in the Radiator business for many years (3rd Generation) until EPA decided it was dangerous. Go to any good radiator shop and ask them if they have a pint of radiator paint, you thin it with gas. Put enough that its like kerosene consistisy. Regular paint will insulate the radiator and it won't disenpate the heat. Just my thoughts! Sorry about the spelling
