C4 and C6 transmissions

Martin made a comment about the C4 being lighter and smaller than the C6. I just always assumed the C6 was a tougher tranny and should be used. Martin or anybody that knows about Ford transmissions could you shed some more light on this for me. I was gonna pick one up but maybe I should do some more research on this. I guess one question to ask is how tough is tough enough. I don't plan on racing it so maybe the C4 is a better choice.......Guess i'm not sure.

My bucket has a warmed over 351 FORD and a 8" rear with a c-4 and no matter how hard i hit the go pedal it does just that GO.I also have a shift kit in it and when you hit number 2 go your head snaps back all in all with that engine you wont hurt even a stock c-4.and it is alot less weighty and smaller that the c-6.JMHO

there are guys here in the 10.5 class that run C4s. Again the age old hotrodder question rears its ugly head..."What am I really gonna do with this thing?" That bucket is still lighter than just about any V8 car ever made....Youre not going to hurt a C4. My friend lauren had a prepped C6 put behind her STOCK 5oh...ugh it reminded me of the truck in sanford n son LOL. Come to think of it...no one I know in the ford camp runs a C6 in racing...C4s, AODs, T5 or a prepped Glide. Fords run best with chevy stuff though

A C6 is way bigger physically, and also sucks up a lot more hp to turn it. Not really needed in a T. A C4 is even a pretty close fit to the brake/master cylinder setup, so I imagine a C6 would be very tough if not impossible. My Kid is running a C4 behind a full bore 306 Ford that we originally built for a drag only car, and it is holding up fine. Fine that is after TCI took it back and replaced it with one with a good front pump! If I ever get drag strip fever with the 27 I am rebuilding I will probably go to a C4 to replace the stick setup. Much more consistent IMO.

This is the C4 in my Sons T. I can't imagine a C6 fitting in there.

I'm sold on the C4 based on the comments. Looking at Dons ride it really puts it in perspective. If you guys say if tough enough thats good for me. I actually grew up around Chevys so when it comes to Fords I really don't know much. Thanks for the input, i'm going to try and pick one up in the next couple weeks.

Mike haven't you ever heard "Built Ford tough with CHEVY stuff"? First time I saw a mustang with an LS1 and a 4L60e...I smiled

I cant believe you people.Chevy,chevy,chevy.Bring it on cube for cube i'll kick your Chevy ASS!!!!

I'm gonna sit out on this one, the last time that happened I got wooped, so i'll just keep my mouth shut "coughfordcough":D

I will say, the more I read about " X " the more i'm becoming a convert.

Since I'm a full time wrench turner and custom faber...........hey...........they ALL have a short coming somewhere.....stock.......that is

when you hotrod em........thats usually fixin whats alin' em........:welcome::lol:

I had the engine and transmission before the framerearend arrived. I went with a C6 because it was easy to find and cheap. When frame with prefab'd motor mounts already welded in place arrived, I would have had a 1" drive shaft ... C6 was too long. Found a C4 on Craig's list and it wound up with a 71/2" drive shaft. I have a Ford 302 engine with a mild street cam and a BM shift kit in the C4. It will put you back in the seat when you hit the excite pedal!

All the Sprint car racers use C4 because they are lighter and tougher.

C6s have a much larger pump that robs as much as 75 HP over a C-4. I have run both in a Fox body Mustang and as long as I stayed under 500 HP and the high 10s the C4 would be adequate. I hear now that Performance Automatic can build one that will run into the high 8s in a 3000 pound car. I know that I had to go with a Powerglide and adapter bell housing to run low 9s.

You could run an AOD out of a Mustang. Its the same length as the C4 and with a shift kit is as strong as a street C-4 plus you get a 4th overdrive speed.
