Found a crack on the edge {in the bend ] of one of my header tubes. these are chrome headers . I'm thinking that I can weld this, but am not sure if I should grind off the chrome first or just try spot.spot .spot like

when welding in a patch

panel. I'll be using my trusty mig. anyone have experience welding on chrome? Budget just simply won't allow me to replace these for the forseeable future. Not much work out there!

I would recommend grinding back the chrome it is not good to breath in I think kinda like breathing in galvanized. DON"T JMO

you need to v out the crack a little for a better weld any way. be careful they are thin

If you take an acetylene torch and soot up the area around where you plan to weld it will help to keep the blueing to a minimum.

Yes, just sand the chrome back as was said, and give yourself some penetration in the tubing. The zinc in the fumes will make you sick, as long as you have good ventilation, you'll be OK.

If you use a 316 stainless filler rod with a small V prep, and soot the surrounding chrome you'll find you can polish the weld up, pickle it with orthophosphoric and while it won't be invisible, it won't rust off.

Just another suggestion....drill a small hole at each end of the crack. This will stop the crack from spreading further after you fill with weld. Might not be necessary but it is cheap insurance. This is done in the aircraft industry as a mandatory repair practice.
