I don't know of any good cad solutions that are free for Windows. But, if you're comfortable using Linux, here is a page that lists just about all of the cad offerings on the Linux platform:
LUnIx . . . CAD & Linux: Linux CAD Links

Under the "License Type" column, anything that says "GPL" is free, and some of the commercial offerings are free for non-commercial use as well. A lot of the tools where developed with citizen tax dollars for the defense department, so it's kind of cool to know you're getting your money back, sort of, by using the tool.

For all my 2-D needs, I use Q-Cad. Super simple tool to use with a very short learning curve. My desktop has been Linux since 1996.

Sorry if any or all of that was not very useful to you, but you never know.

go to cnet.com and then to downloads ( on left hand side) then type in free cad and it brings up free cad programs, dont know if they are what you are after but its worth a shot. chaz

For 2-D work I use Draft-It it can be down loaded for free from
FREE CAD Download

And for 3-D work I use Google Sketch-Up.
Google SketchUp

Sletch Up has a huge user library, you can upload work you have done or download work done by others.
google-sketchup-component-library - Google 3D Warehouse Search (try searching "model T" or "T bucket")

Both are free downloads, and both work very well for the money ;)

I also use Photo shop so that I can paint and draw on photos, that way I can see how something is going to look before cutting any steel.

Hey c cab

My son just turned me onto a free 3D Google program called Sketchup. I haven't had time to work in it yet but the sample work I see ranges for childlike to pretty darn good. I'm guess it depends on the users ability and patience on computer. Here is a link to some sample work

MIS FAVORITOS by drfdisegnos - Google 3D Warehouse

As for a technical program that is free, I don't know of any. I'm a graphic artist by trade and do all my work in Adobe Illustrator, but it is so far from free it's depressing. Next time I talk with my computer savy son I'll ask him if he knows any tech type drawing programs for free.

Hope Sketchup works for you.

I just stumbled across this website dedicated to free cad software for the PC:
FreeCAD.com - Cad freeware

Seems to be worth a look.

David

EDIT: Well, I spoke too soon. Seems some of the offerings are not for free. But, with that said, the prices on some of the tools are not free are really low. So I think it's still worth a look.
