electric fuel pump problem? Thats a maybe.

I was driving along and started slowing down to go into my driveway when the engine just shut down. A quick check and I could find nothing. Engine started right back up gave it a couple of revs, seemed ok. put it in gear and drove to the back of the house and it died again. This time I look at the gage on the fuel log. Zero psi. I run it at 6 PSI and it will hold pressure for at least an hour after the engine is shut off. I put in a bypass switch so I can prime the fuel log and carbs before I start the engine. I push the switch and I could hear the pump running and the PSI went up to 6 PSI and stayed there. I waited awhile to make sure I didn't have a fuel leak. Started the T up and ran the engine for a few minutes. No problems. Two days later I started it up and ran it until it reach operating temp. Rev it up watch gage no drop in fuel PSI. I'm running a Holley Red 12-801-1
So my question is for anyone who has had a problem with their electric fuel pump. When your pump died was there any indication it was going or did it just quit working? Right now I'm going through the electrical wiring to see if there is anything that came loose.

Holly red pumps seldom just quit. Wire loose or pickup tube broken or or line clogging up.. Test and VITRIFY BEFORE spending money.

Most of the time i forget to turn the switch on it it dose the same thing i hate that when it happens at a red light

That's happened to me a few times. This happened after driving around for a hour. I've been working on the top and haven't had time to look for the problem. I hope its a loose wire. Easy fix.

Had a little scare myself today. Took the bucket out for a ride and after only a short distance the temp gage was pegged, and seemed to be bouncing against the post! Oh no - overheating!!! Fortunately was close to home so I scooted in the garage & shut it off, expecting to hear boiling sounds coming from the radiator. No sounds. Waited a bit and checked the coolant level - right up to snuff. Then crawled under the dash and took a look: sure enough, the nut holding the ground connection to the gage was about to fall off. Tightened it up and back in business. You gotta check all nuts and fittings religiously in these things, especially ground connections!!!:confused:

Good job checking things first, Spanky.
Probably saved you a lot of money.
Smart troubleshooting!

I went through all my fuel lines. From tank to carbs and found nothing wrong. Then I checked all the electrical connections. Found nothing. I changed the oil psi fuel pump safety switch. Went for short rides yesterday and today with no problems. Only time will tell.

What type fuel filter are you using?

I have had a similar problem. The Holey Red pump works fine some days and others its shuts off. If I let it sit for a couple minutes, it starts working again. It used to make noise, now I dont hear it running. Checked all the wiring and it is all good. Ordering a new Summit pump today.

I couldn't find anything wrong so I'm just taking 20 minute rides and staying close to home. When I have more confidence that I'm not going to be stranded in the middle of nowhere. I'll extend my range. Let me know if the new pump solves your problem.

Dan, did the new pump solve your problem?

I started the T and let it warm up. Fuel psi gage started out a 5 psi. The longer the engine ran the lower the psi was just before the fuel log. Went all the way down to 2psi. I changed the fuel pump thinking it was getting hot and the efficiency was dropping. Nothing change. Next replaced gage and regulator. Same problem. Then I put in a regulator with a return line to tank. Blew out all the fuel line, check vent on tank. Every line and vent were clear. No blockage. Started engine and set regulator to 5 psi. I also put a psi gage before the regulator. I checked to make sure fuel was running through the return line back to tank. Everything seems to be working as it should. Except the psi. Started at 5 dropped to 2.5 psi. I drove around for 30 minutes when I checked the psi it was up to 3.5. Anybody know what is causing this? I have no fuel leaks.

Just curious, why not run the stock pump and use the electric to prime the stock one if bucket has sit for a while. Clearance Problems?

I'm not set up for stock pump and I prefer electric. I put over 5000 miles on without any problems.

The regulators and gauges can both do strange things when they get hot. I think there is also something about liquid filled gauges needing to be bled, I just don't remember the circumstances.

Check the voltage at the pump. Flow volume drops drastically with a reduced voltage.

Are you using a relay with a switch or a switch only to provide voltage to the pump?
