Faster than a T Bucket

I think its an awesome engineering feat. But I think I could outrun it.HAHA

Thanks RPM!

That was incredible. It's fun to read about all the "no longer" top secret stuff. ;)

The first time I saw one it was as a blip on my radar scope in 1967-68 when I was in Southeast Asia. I thought it was a rocket coming in but it was coming from the wrong direction. My OIC checked the frag order and said it was an SR on a reccy headed to Hanoi and Haiphong and then back to its home base in Guam. The second time, and the only time I actually got to see the real thing in flight, was in the mid 80s when I was in England. Occasionally one would return from a mission early and fly a couple of approaches at my base to burn off fuel before flying home to RAF Mildenhall. I saw the aircraft as he crossed the threshhold and was on the go from a low approach. He lit the burners, the flame looking like it extended 20 feet behind the aircraft, and the 'Blackbird' got real small, real fast. I will never forget it.

Makes you wonder what they got now.

thanks ron for posting that. truly an awesome piece of aircraft fabrication.

I've received that email several times this year and always take the time to watch it at least once. Try as I may I just can't imagine traveling 1 mile in 1.6 seconds.

A record that still stands today. The plane was built by Lockheed Martins' Skunk Works. Kelly Johnson was frustrated by the U2 which never did achieve its goal of overflying soviet radar, and of coarse was eventually being reached by missile fire. Stealth technology didn't exist yet, so Johnson decided that he was going to build something that would outrun the missles, and thats exactly what the SR71 would do. Unfortunately when the plane was retired all the patterns, molds, and tooling used to build it were destroyed.

I was able to see one of these fascinating planes while it was in a hanger many years ago. Very impressive!!!

Of all places there is an air and space exibit and restoration facility at Hutchinson Kansas AKA Kansas Cosmosphere . They have SR in the lobby about 20 feet above your head . I recomend this place they have ww2 buzz bombs V2 rockets space capsules space suites and tons of apollo, mercury, gemini stuff. Apollo 13 and liberty bell 7 are there u can walk right up to them and look in.

I can remember my mom talking about the V2 rockets and buzz bombs of WW2. She lived in London at the time.
