Favorite Cruising Burger Joint??

Back...way back when I started cruising and hanging out I use to like to hang at Biff Burger....an early attempt at fast food, long before Mickie dees, or Hardees...Burger King, etc. Biff Burger had 15 cent burgers that were dipped in sause before being put on a bun...Its been 45 years and I can still remember the taste of their charbroiled dipped burgers...At one point there were hundreds of Biff Burgers all over the east coast and doing some research I found one lone Biff Burger still open in Florida....darn now I have to plan a road trip hope the sause is the same as I remember

Growing in a small town we only had the A&W at the edge of town. We cruised the drive in, layed a patch as we entered Hwy 3 heading back into town, circled the courthouse and back to the A&W for round two.

After I was asked to leave the college I was attending (sometimes) I moved to Kansas City. I don't remember the street but there were two drive-ins, Christies and NuWay, that were located a mile or so apart. There was a constant stream of cars going back and forth between the two.

I don't recall ever getting anything to eat at either or the KC drive-ins but I do remember giving the carhops a hard time at the A&W ordering 'huckleberry' sundaes and malts. We were more into cruisin' the chicks, loud pipes and burning rubber, and general hell raising. Oh, and scoring a sixer of Hamms from time to time.

Way back in the late 60s early 70s we cruised from a Micky Dees to a Burger King on Hwy 2 south of Baltimore. Every night run up and down the strip. They were about 2 miles apart. There was more street racing going on than you could shake a stick at. The only thing that ever beat me was a Kawasaki motorcycle. We were pretty careful who we would pick a race with. I had a souped up 400 small block in a 66 Nova that wore 283 badges and most eveybody thoght thats what is was. The guys with the SS 396 Chevelles ain't never figured out how they lost there money to a 283 duece. LOL

Back in the day, there was a Prince's Hamburgers on our Main street. A car club called the Rodtiques used to hang there on Friday or Saturday nights. After I had fallen in love with hot rods, my dad used to take my brother and I to check out the cars.

The whole downtown is all modern now and that location closed and reopened in a strip mall off a highway feeder.:sad: The foods still good, but it ain't the same. I cruised up to it when I got my T done and it just didn't do it for me.

There's a Sonic burger joint close by, but I'm the only hot rod that goes there. Place is just down from where the Texans play and would make a cool place to hang out. Folks on this side of Houston don't seem to get it.

The little town I live in now use to have 4 or 5 real car hop drive ins that you could cruise, we are down to three, counting the Sonic, which I dont cruise mostly because the owner has a sign on the side of the building that says something to the effect...order, eat, and get off my parking lot. Our town passed a strict no cruising ordanance several years ago, make more than two passes up and down the same street with in 30 minutes, get a ticket....stop at a drive in for food and you are not allowed to get out of the car to visit with your buddies...all businesses on the main drag have no cruising signs on their parking lots...it aint pretty....the city fathers, guys my age, thought the new law would keep the kids from cruising...the police chief did not see it that way and he ordered all
cruisers, young and old ticketed...back fired on the older guys in town...now if you just happen to be out at 3am...there is only one barney fife on duty on the other end of town...well you know.

About 45 minutes north and east of Mountain Home Ar. our town is not unique however Springfield MO host several three day large car events at their fair grounds each day, Oreilly's event, NSRA, and others and they have a strict no cruising ordanance too, you will see No Cruising signs on all of the streets around the fair grounds...I am not sure how much tourist/show goers money comes into the town during the events but I would think the Chamber of Commerce there would help lighten up the cruising laws.

I went to a three day event in Salina KS this summer and the cops and town officials were very cool, all of 9th street from the Interstate back about three miles was crusing heaven, so was most of the town...they even opened up an old deserted airport runway so we could hold some old style drag races....it was 450 miles to get there and I will go back next year just because of the way the town opened up to the event.

When I was young we had LOTS of driveins. whe had a local bunch call the Oasis with 5 or 6 stratigicaly placed locations. Most guys had a loop between to OA's or one OA and an AW. no drag strip in town for most of that time so lots of white lines painted across city back streets. Even then El Paso was very spread out, like 5 towns hooket together by a downtown. Now only sonic has car hops, we have no crusing signs on every street that is crusable? and...

In my time one end of our strip was around a now gone hardees resturant, was always a popular hangout. then 5 blocks of semi-downtown/residential/resort, then the street turned at the pavilion then about 1/2 mile of beach, bar and grilles and resorts, turn around at the american legion club/campground and repeat. It was a little over 10 minutes per circuit on a slow night in the late 70s early 80s and a busy weekend like the 4th of july it could take up to near 2 hours per loop. We had a ball, sit and watch others if money was tight. several parking lots were available to sit in plus the dairy queen and A&W near the beach, now gone. We still cruise here, it was never outlawed and you wont get a ticket unless you deserve it. Cruising has fallen from popularity with the local youth, costs alot of money for gas, dads car just isnt cool and the strip is just a shadow of what it was in the past. theres a few still toughin it out tho. I go once a month or so, just to keep my life in perspective and rattle some windows. Paul

I'm not old enough to have stories of cruizing in the 60's and 70's (or even the eighties-I'm 33), but the minute I got my my first car, a '68 merc cougar, up and running, I headed straight to Bill's Fabulous 50's which was a drive-in just west of of the loop. Man it was a cool place until they tore it down to build a gas station. Now its off to The Sud's in Greenwood (south of town). Its struggled for years to stay afloat (even closing for a while) but I was just there last night and there was the usual 100's of cars. Indy used to have dozen's of drive-ins, now there is only a handfull.

I'm glad I live in a place where cruising is still active Fri and Sat nites!

I used to cruise University Ave in St. Paul in the '60's and '70's. there were two drive ins about 10 blocks apart, Porkies at the west end and The Three Bears at the east end. It was great. About 4 stop lights between them. If you couldn't find any action there, you went to the "loop" downtown. Drove a '55 Delray in the pre-Navy days and a '67 GTO in the post- days. Ahhhh.....Life was great in those days!!!!

Ahhh... Porkies and the The Three Bears In the '60's and '70's in St. Paul Minnesota... life was great then!!

For those of you in southern Minnesota there's a joint in Mankato called "Busters" on Thursday night that caters to cruisin'.

I was in the twin cities two months ago and my brother and I swung by Porky's (sans hot rod) for a while...its still the place to be in St. Paul. Guys were cruising by all nite and getting on it... lot sof fun!

My dad spent his last few years of High School just west of Minneapolis. He said the place to be there was the Porky's on Lake Street...no longer there, but I heard that they are considering opeing one near there again.

I to was not old enough to get to cruise in the 60s :sad: but I remember in the 70s going to a drive in with my Dad, Mom and her sisters and all the kids would hide under a blanket till the car was in the gate. When I did get to cruise I was 16 and had a 1973 nova with 350 bright red with 7" wheels in the front 10" on the rear with 295/50s air shocks and shock extenders it had that 80s rake. We would cruise from the point a old gas station to the other end of town to the city restaurant about 3 mile loop. Now no one really cruises we go to the shows in pigeon forge Tenn. it's only about 60 miles real good cruising.

In my late teens after votech I was living down in mounds view mn.
The cruise had just been shut down on central ave and moved out to anoka.
We had ALOT of fun out there. There was a place called friskys just off the strip. We headed there as soon as we had the shop shut down on friday nights for corn doggies and root beer floats. I was just past it earlier this year, friskies is still there but the awning is now enclosed. Makes it hard to park under. lolol.
I was driving a 1955 2 dr post cevrolet..It was all I had and almost lived in it...
