I have an electronic GPS speedometer, which I love. But . . . a couple times recently, the odometer display has gone blank while I'm driving and the needle drops to 0 MPH. When I stop and shut the electrics down, wait a bit then turn it back on, it displays as always and the needle registers my speed. I've checked the electrical connections, and all good. What gives?

I don't know if losing the signal would cause that or not. Does it seem to happen in the same area? I know my handheld GPS losses the signal and no longer functions. Do you have another GPS that you could take along? Just to see if the both stop showing speed.

I have seen them do that when they lose the GPS satellite signal, just like the Sirius radio in my truck. Examples: Mountainous areas, in the city with tall buildings all around and roads that were cut deep into bedrock!

Mine looses the satellites occasionally, but it always re-establishes contact within 30-60 seconds.

Spanky, maybe you’re just driving too fast. The satellite signal just can’t keep up with that speeding T Bucket!!!!

Does anyone here know if stand alone GPS units are legal for use as the sole speedometer in a self built roadster in Arkansas? Curious minds need to know.

I have no doubt that is in their thinking (scheming) process.

I can’t think of a reason to admit it’s GPS if they ask.

I was referring to a stand a lone Garmin unit that sticks to your windshield. I use one now on my truck as the dash unit is DOA and I have no interest in replacing it. I know they do make automotive GPS Speedometers but I don't really think I want to pay the price.
