"An error has occurred. The Admin does not allow registrations behind proxy servers."
What's up with that?
When users access our registration pages, we scan for open ports that are most commonly used on proxy servers. Actually, we scan for the possibility of just three, open proxy ports. If any one of the three are open, we deny registration.
A proxy server is a server that serves as a go-between, or an intermediary server between a desktop station and the Internet. There can be instances where someone is trying to register from a workstation at their place of employment, but their IT department runs some open ports, for whatever reason. I have seen instances where AT&T customers get pinched because some of the old SBC Global servers ran some open ports.
But the most common reason for running on a proxy server is to conceal one's identity. Since every computer leaves tracks, showing everywhere we go on the Web, some individuals will mask their IP address by running through a proxy.
If you are your place of employment, there really isn't much you can do about changing things, unless your IT people do not realize they are running some questionable open ports. (They may have ports open to stop employees from accessing certain sites on company time, which I can understand.)
If you are experiencing problems with an Internet Service Provider at your home, I would suggest you contact your provider and ask them how they intend to work around the problem they are creating for you. If your provider would like to know the ports we are checking, send me a Personal Conversation and I will get them to you.
We've been running this tool on this particular site since mid-August of last year and on the Hot Rod Refuge site since Day One.
