Probably just residual heat in the block. When you are driving air movement through the radiator and around the engine helps with the cooling. When you stop there is no air movement. Have you notice the temp climb when you sit at a long stop light? It will go down when you start moving again.
If it climbs at all at a stop, you need a bigger/BETTER fan...(or a smaller water pump pulley) simple fix, but needed... all the air in the world around the block itself, really makes no difference, only the water or coolent is all that cools that engine, unless it is air cooled..
A lot of guys think cooler is better thats not true a lot of the new cars will run 210 to 220 with no problems fred i wouldnt even be concerned even up to 200 deg then after you start movin it will come down just make sure you have a good radiator cap and drive it. To cool will cause another complete set of problems. fred is that fan pushin or pullin> should be pullin through the radiator if you mounted it inside.
fred its just residual heat,or saturation..
its normal for the water temperature within the block to raise because the water in the coolant system is not circulating anymore, so its sitting there soaking up the heat..
Ok guys i agree with the residual heat deal that makes sense but why does his temp only get up to 160/165 tops with NO fan at all? I think its the wrong thermostat to low of a temp.I told him to go to a 180 am i wrong here?
