I wrote in another forum today, my concern about a picture article I read in this months Hot Rod Magazine. The article was about a 27 T coupe that had been built by a father & son team. The car is a bare bones, Ascot jalopy sort of ride that is well done, with great proportions, 4 cyl. engine w/injection. For people who appreciate uniqueness, it can really draw you in. The article was written as a tribute to the father, who died before the car was finished. "Veteran T" is the title. David Freiburger is the author. WELL known journalist, and past / present editor of Hot Rod, Car Craft, and other magazines.
What really got to me was the caption he penned about the radiator overflow can. There was a picture of a Japanese canteen with cover. On the cover are three brass chrysanthemum pins. The pins are supposedly representative of the killing of three Allied soldiers in combat by the owner of the canteen. I find the retelling of this "possible truth" to be in exceedingly bad taste on Freiberger's part. The builder, Rob Johnson, "believes" that this story is true. Why was this bit of trivia added? Did it make the car more of a "period piece" and add to it's story.
When I placed a thread in the large "Traditional" hot rod forum, the thread was deleted because the the moderator lost three relatives to the Japanese during the war and felt the thread was in bad taste there fore should be 86'd. It was never established wether the article by Freiberger or my starting the thread was considered to be in bad taste. My contention is that it should have stayed and let the readers decide if it was appropriate. It was within ALL the guidelines for postings. I say poor journalism on Freibergers part AND the people at the large, 'Traditional" forum.
This is my first forum deletion and it is very frustrating. If i am wrong, please tell me your opinion. If Mike feels it is not worth comment, he will delete the posting also. I needed to vent.
Thanks, John
