This was the one that started it all. For about 4 years, I had been reading everything about drag racing I could get my hands on. And in 1969, a very good friend, who was a cameraman for the local CBS affiliate, said he had press passes for Indy. The weather sucked on the day, but the scent of nitro was enough to let me overlook a bit of mud.
Imagine standing on the starting line at Indy, for the very first drag race you ever attended. To say I was gut-hooked on that day is a massive understatement.
What is really amazing is looking back at all of those named racers and realizing I was lucky enough to get to know many of them, and many of them were valve spring customers.
