MSO question

I just wanted to publicly answer this question, since I get ask this all the time. Our kits come with and MSO. The MSO says 1923 Ford, it does not say 2014 kit car. Also keep in mind that ALL new vehicles come with an MSO, not a title. We just bought a new trailer in Jan and it came with an MSO. The state in which you live issues you the title. If you go buy a new Chevy, GM issued the dealer and MSO. That MSO is then sent to your states DMV along with other paper work. Then your state issues you a title. If you are buying a car and it comes with a title. You are buying a used car!

Yes, thank you Ron. Would you or any other manufacturer sell an MSO to a guy building a car? If not, does anyone know where you might get one? Thinking way ahead for my project, but good to be prepared!!

The DMV in Louisiana told me they didn't care about the MSO at all because my car is registered as an assembled car and all they care about is the price of it so they can make sure they get the taxes right.

Kansas would not accept the MSO that Spirit furnished with my kit. I had to provide a complete accounting for all the components and where I got them. Anything from out-of-state (which was about 90% of the car) they charged me sales tax on, and they issued me a title for an "assembled vehicle."

I know they advertise you get a "title" with your kit, but here in Georgia you can't get a title until it's assembled and inspected. I've been told here in Georgia all you need to so is take the car to have it inspected. Does not have to even run. All you have to do is show it has all the brakes, lights, mirrors etc. and they give you paperwork to send off for your title. They "recommend" having bill of sale or receipts on your driveline, but you could just list frame and body as "home built". Pretty easy in Georgia so it sounds. Still will be nice to have the MSO from Ron especially if it will help me get it titled as a 23.

I'm not disputing at all why they say, but it's weird that any state would issue a title for boxes of parts.

I should have provided a little more detail. Kansas DMV would not issue a title until the car was inspected by the State Patrol. To be inspected, the car had to be "road-worthy" and have all the required safety features listed in the regs. They did have me take it off the trailer, drive it around the parking lot, and demonstrate that all of the safety features worked. They even had me take out the seat so they could look at the seat belt attachments! It was the State Patrol that wanted to see my accounting for all the significant components. I believe they ran database searches for anything that had a serial number to see if anything was stolen. After I passed inspection, they handed me an inspection certificate and my parts documentation that had been stamped "Kansas State Patrol" and the date, which I then took to DMV to pay the sales taxes, property taxes and registration fee. They issued me a registration certificate and gave me a plate for the car. I got the title in the mail about two weeks later. My T is titled as a 2006 assembled vehicle.

We have found that all states, counties, and even offices don't abide by the same rules and regulation's. Some states are easier than others. Let's not even talk about the Federal Gov't! Some states will only title the car with a MSO/MCO as what year it was assembled in. You just don't get a title for boxes of parts. You have to email or mail us pictures of the car. It has to look like a car before we can issue an title. We have been down many roads and have talked to many DMV's, and state official's across the US over the years helping customers get their Spirit cars titled. That is why we worked hard with Senators, Representatives in Arkansas and SEMA to help get the street rod law passed. Also we worked really hard with the Arkansas Motor Vechile commission, our Local Senator Johnny Key, other Senators and Representatives in the state of Arkansas and are able to issue an Arkansas title. When we issue a title Spirit Cars is a new car dealer which also makes us a used car dealer. So Spirit Cars uses the MSO to create the Arkansas Title. So all the hard work is done. Then we can issue the title for the car once it is completed and it will transfer to your state just like you came to Arkansas and purchased a used vehicle. You also get a bill of sale of what you bought from Spirit Cars for tax purposes. The title we read replica and be titled as what year it resembles. This is an important issue that we all need to continue to work together to preserve this wonderful hobby!
