Name that rear end!

I bought a 23 Tbucket project ( was not completed but came with many parts) that I have began to work on. I know that going to the auto store to get a part for its components with be next to impossible without the year/make/model.

Can anybody give me an idea to where this rear end came from? - Thanks for the help!

P.S. - "Guess that Engine and trans!" will be up in the next couple of days. :)

It is exactly like my '96 S10 rear.

It is drum. I do not know the width at the time but will update. Apparently it was shortened but I cant take anything the old owner told me for granted.

So far this S-10 answer looks popular. Keep that info coming!

another question---- To figure out if this is the original set of gears or not or even what ratio I have, how do I figure that out? count the teeth? Thanks!

There are a few different ways. You can look for the code samped in the metal next to the differential and check what G.M says it came with from the factory. But I'd be willing to bet that you can't read it any longer.
Or you can also count the teeth on the pinion gear in the forward part of the axle housing. Count the number of the teeth in the big ring gear attached to the differential. Divide the number of teeth on the pinion into the number of teeth on the ring gear. This is the gear ratio.

Not that the knowledge on here will not answer your questions, but go to the Randy's Ring and Pinion website. It has calculators and a lot of other information available. I am on their email list and get notifications of their sales which offers some nice stuff. A phone call helped me identify the 8.2 gm axle under my T. Also if you need it fast, they are good.

that may be s10, It's just like the one in my 96 Sonoma, but it is the rarer 8.5/6 ring gear model, not the more common 7.5 setup.

It may have come from a ZR2 series truck. Since the axle has been modified it may be hard to really know. The ZR2 rear ends were wider then the average S-10 rear end. Also after 99 they came with disk brakes. Take the information Railroad offered and I'm sure all your questions can be answered. I'd also look for the tag or engraving on the axle tube and that would take any questions away except for knowing if the gear ratio had been changed.
