New build FloridaI'm starting

Mike J

Member
Just got my stretch body from RPM, and ready to start "the build". At what point should the floor be put in? I'm starting to mock up the frame out of wood first tonight. Thanks everyone. This is only the beginning of the questions that will be coming. Mike J

Mike
First off WELCOME you have come to the right forum

Besides the body what other parts do you have
I started with the frame on my build
I was lucky enough to have all the parts needed for the build then I assembled the frame AND now I am dealing with the body
hope this helps
Ron at RPM is a great guy (He will even call you back if you don't leave a message)
He will advise you through this build and so will the guys on the forum
Frank

Mike J, where in Florida are you located?

Jim

Now that you have the body, build the frame and mock up the engine and trans. Leave the eng and trans in the frame. Channel the body to fit, Now make a cardboard pattern to fit for the floor. The reason you left the eng and trans installed so the floor will fit around it all. Then install the floor once it all fits good. Then you can do the trans tunnel at the same time. If you have any questions, just give me a call. I REALLY don't mind one bit.

Mike J, you have received an offer that you can't and SHOULDN'T refuse from Ron at RPM. He will give you ALL the advice that you may need along with the parts to "git 'er dun".

I only have Trans. and rear end at this moment but I will be getting a t least a bare block shortly.
I don't I have a problem getting advise from Ron or anywhere else on these forums by the looks of it so far, thanks. Mike J

I also have the steel for the frame, but I'm going to mock up the chassis first out of wood that I already have made 2x3 for better accuracy. I'd rather make a mistake with wood first. lol.

I'm not channeling the body, as you called it I'm going to zee the frame 3" so iI don't loose interior space. Thank you, I will do it that way so i'll probably need a trans. tunnel before long. Mike J

You are doing this right. The bare block will work because you are establishing the length you need, be sure to account for the water pump. Establish where the rear kick up will be bring the body back to that point and place the rest of the parts on,and you will have it figured out. Ron is a good man to talk to, he has helped me more than once.

Welcome. You've gotten good advice so far and I won't add anything about your floor, but if your just starting you will want to save all the receipts for what you use to build the car even the steel you use for the frame. If you have any serial numbered items (block, trans, some rearends, etc), be sure to get a bill of sale on them. Some states want a paper trail for all traceable items.

I don't know how the registration process goes in Florida, but I had to have all those things when I titled mine in Louisiana. You might want to go by or call the DMV and get a heads up on the registration process for your state now. It would really suck to get it done and have problems on that end.

Good luck and have fun! BTW Post pics of the build progress. Everyone likes to see them.

I am keeping all receipts and I will start getting serial #'s, just in case. I just mocked up the wood frame tonight and I will post pics when I figure out how to do it. I've seen a thread on how to post pics, now I'll have to actually read the whole thing...

I'm in Estero, just south of Ft. Myers.

Mike J, we usually visit freinds every year in Estero. Will have to PM you when we get plans in place for this spring and look you up. Always like to meet the people of the forum.

By all means Wayne look me up, maybe by then it will be a roller. I mocked up the wood frame yesterday, Looks good . I'll try to do some pics today, but i don't know which forum to put them in. Do you? By the way do you know what IMHO and IMO are ? I'm new to some of the abbreviations. Mike J.

IMHO = In My Humble Opinion & IMO = In My Opinion.

When you first start reading all this information, you think, why would you build with wood? Why would you mock up? I think when you start to get it, you are really starting to get it!
