New shop rule

It occurred to me today while working on some outside projects for other folks that I'm not gettin' much done on my '27. I now have a new rule in my shop, "For every hour I spend on outside projects, the '27 gets equal time." It's not that I mind outside projects, it's just that if I want to have the modified running by next June, I gotta kick it in the butt!

Any one else got rules?

Ron

Yup, I used to slide the big front door open on my shop when I was working, more light, less welding smoke. Then It seemed I had a shop full of "friends" who stopped by to see what I was building or working on, and to BS....Couldn't get a heck of a lot done.
So the new rule iz.....Close all doors, turn up the Doo-Wop, try to concentrate on the job at hand.....
Now when ever I run into some of the guys, I always hear...."Drove by yur shop last week, but the door was closed, do ya ever work on anything anymore?" ...NOPE !:)......."BH"

You can't see my garage door from the street but as soon as the sun sets the lights in the shop give me away. I beginning to think rodders are like bugs. They seem to flock to my lights.

Start charging outrageous amounts of money for your time, that slows the traffic down.. I got 2 teenage boys in the neighborhood whom I refer to as "the lawnmower twins" I often leave my doors closed so they dont see im in there, front door is usually locked to. These 2 are the town lawn mowing team. They are homeschooled and have almost no concept of buisness or the outside world, sad deal. They drag stuff over for me to patch back togather, sometimes I can sometimes its beyond fixing.
I can mow my own lawn in about an hour and a half, little less. These 2 can come in with a big riding mower and take 3 hours (or more) to mow. when theyre done Ill ask how much and the awnser is usually $5.. Ughhhhhh, guys you got time, gas, wear and tear on your equipment to think of. Try to explain the concept of buisness to them but its all smoke and mirrors to the twins.. In a few short years the world is gonna be tough on them...

So if i read your message right you have found a way to increase the normal day by 6 hours. If i give the my T equal time well its a good thing i like bologna.

No Rooster, not to rub it in but I retired a month ago thinking I would have plenty of time to work on my car. It's just that these other interesting projects keep coming up. Maybe Norseman's right. Could be the pricing is off. I just can't believe anyone would pay more than that for this stuff.

I'm kind of a loner when it comes to working on my projects, I really want to be alone with my thoughts and work at my own pace. I see a lot of guys who are members of a club or just have a lot of friends who work on each others cars, and that is great if you like that. Maybe I'm anti-social, but I just prefer to be alone in the shop. Sometimes Dan will be in one side of the shop working on his car, and I will be in my section, and we might not say two words until one of us needs a hand with something. He's like me, he likes to work in silence. Guess I'm odd that way.:o

Nope not odd at all. I hate having people in my shop when I am out there. I usually spend more time making sure they are doing things the way I do things instead of doing my own work.

I have a neighbor that insists "If the door is open Brian wants to talk" so over he comes and I never get anything done.

Don't let anyone in unless they bring beer and pizza.

I've been lucky enought to be able to do most things at night (and very early morning) at our warehouse at work. I'm sure that once the chassis hits my garage, I'll run into similar problems like the rest of you.

One bonus, my work is so shoddy that no one will want me to make anything for them...lol.

From what I've seen, you're picking it up just fine.

Wow... don't know what to make of this thread...

I got two buddies that we do all kinds of stuff now together on different projects and it's a blast to give each other crap, time passes by real quick and we get a lot of work done... guess I'm odd man out here... Just a couple of months ago, we went to a guys house, yanked all the wiring out of his 54 panel and within one and a half days, we had it completely rewired done... worked perfect... he would have never tried it on his own... I guess I just really enjoy helping guys out...

That's the other side of the coin Al. I don't mind helping others out at all. Now that I can work in the shop during the day, I don't have as many interruptions. The point I was trying to make is I'm not getting as much done on my T as I would like to. I bothers me to be working on my stuff when I told someone I would do something for them. It's all about setting my priorities I guess. I see guys like Tbuct, Thomas, and Fred out drivin' and I'm still lookin' at a pile of parts. Oh well, life goes on. I'll get there one way or the other.

Simple Ron... repeat after me... "Be more than happy to help ya out with (fill in the blank) just as soon as I get the T done"!

Repeating....Be more than happy to help you out with fill in the blank just as soon as I get the T done! There that wasn't so hard after all. Thanks Al!

I rent a small shop that is fenced in and has a gate that you have to put a code in to open i can work on my T and nobody bothers me i dont even play a radio when i work .
everybody thinks that when you retire you have all this spair time on your hands. I tell them i have wated 40yrs to get to the point where i can do the things that i want to do.

I guess the interruptions aren't as bad as they could be. Often times the guys stopping by are just interested in what I've gotten done since their last visit. A couple just stop to see what's in my scrap bin. I've sold more pieces out of that than you would believe. I now have a for sale bin for things I wasn't satisfied with or have replaced.

I have locks on the inside and outside of the doors. I can lock myself in or lock others out, either way is good for me. Since I had a friend of a friend knock my original hilborn injection set-up for my hemi off the shelf breaking one of the injectors and dinging all four 12" stacks no one is allowed anymore.

I lock the doors, pull the shades, crank up some Slayer or Sex Pistols and get stuff done.

I hope he at least said he was sorry.

I get a little nervous sometimes after someone new is in the shop. I've been cleaned out once and don't want to go through that again.
