Questions for anyone running a mechanical fan,

When i bought my T-Bucket it already had an electric fan but it was just hooked up to a toggle switch. So i bought a fan switch/relay/thermostatic control set up. But i keep looking at my T-Bucket and thinking "A chrome fan sure would look cool" and be much simpler than an electric fan. So my question is, for you guys in the hotter climates (105 to 110 is the usual temps around here in the summer time) that are running mechanical fans, how well do they cool? I have about 6 1/2" between the pulley and the radiator so that should be plenty of room for a mechanical fan.

...but for some reason i keep putting off installing it. And there's just something about watching a chrome fan spin around...

When I'm sitting a lot the mechanical fan doesn't work so good on the hottest days. Other than that its great. I still need to build a shroud then it should be just fine. It also has to do with the condition of the cooling system.

The mounting surface of my six blade, fifteen inch fan is 2 1/2" from the radiator and I am not using a shroud.. I live in Florida, the Orlando area to be exact, with high temps and lots of traffic jams and I have never overheated.
When I built my car I allowed enough room between the radiator and water pump pulley to run an electric fan if the mechanical would not do the job. I just do not like the looks nor the sound of an electric fan and so far my mechanical is performing excellently.

I am with Jim on that, I use a mechanical fan also, it is close to my core, 3/4" and as big as I can fit into my space... (test by putting a shop towel to the front of the radiator while idling, if it holds it there with no problems, it should cool while either stopped or slow driving) I try and run plenty of lead also in the timing, it also helps keep things cool... It is way HOT here in Bakersfield in the Summer... :thumb:

I forgot to mention something; I try and stay away from chrome fans, as they can break blades off quicker when chromed, it seems like, and that is not fun, if it (the broken blade) goes in the wrong direction, and usually does... SO; I paint the fan any color you like and do the tips (last inch or so) White, this way you can see it very easily, and keep your hands and fingers away from it, easy to miss it if it is all dark. Stay safe... :)
