Guys
what are the "auto recycleing yards" in your area charging for S10 rears? Two local yards quoted me aroun $300 and I walked away. is this normal?

I paid $90 for a 96 2wd S 10 with 4:10 gears. Of course that was in 2001.

Yes and No.... the dollar has been devalued as of late....just don't buy as much. The Recyclers usually get more for what they have, theres no reason why you can't get a S10 rear for under $150. Usually you can pick them up for $75 TO $100 around here. If nothing else, look on craigs list or your local paper for someone parting one out....

$100 here at most yards or pull-a-parts. I just picked up one a few months ago for $98 out the door at pic-a-part.

Normally here they go for between $ 100 and $ 150. Too bad you aren't closer, I have a non posi 3.73 geared S10 rear that I bought and it was too narrow for my rpu project. I would take $ 100 for it, and paid $ 125.

If you have a "pic-a-part" or pull-a-part, this is where you'll find your best deal. We have both here and when I'm looking for these rears I have my choice of about 20 or so. I go armed with the axle codes so I can check what the ratio and whether it has the limited slip option before I pull it. If you go this route, a battery powered impact wrench is your friend along with some penetrating lube and a breaker bar. We pulled the last one in about 15 minutes. A few more tips on these axles:
1. Try to get an axle with the ratio you want. You can swap gears later, but you may need a shim as the gears are carrier specific. Typical ratios i would recommend are 3.08, 3.42, or 3.73 depending on your setup.
2. Try to find the newer ones from the 90's as they have the bolt-in brake cylinder which are easier to deal with than the clip style. These also are usually in better shape and have good backing plates.
3. try to find one with the yoke that has the gm style universal joint attachment. Some of the extended cab models had balancers on the yoke which you don't want. If this is the best you can find, don't worry, you can pull the yoke from another rear end. This is what I did on the last rear I pulled. It was a 3.42 with the limited slip, but had the balancer yoke. I pulled the yoke from another rear and took the driveshaft as well.
These are great rear ends for these T's. Parts are cheap and easy to find at all the parts chains. I've assembled a file that has all the rear end ratio codes, and the misc part #'s for brakes, bearings, seals etc. If I can get them off my crashed computer hard drive, I'll post them up here.

Thanks guys, I'll head to the other side of town next week. the u-pull-it on my side wanted $350 for a 94 extended cab, the only late one they had!

I paid $250 for my S-10 rear in 2007. It has 3:73 gears and it came with a warranty. Of course, everything related to trucks are high here. Most folks either own one or they are looking to.
