Sandblasting Wheels

Is it safe to sand blast a steel wheel while it still has an inflated tire attached to it? I know this is not exactly a t-bucket question but, I would like to know. My daily driver has 4 steel wheels that are kind of rusty. I would like to sand blast them and spray them with rattle cans. Any thoughts?

Thanks.

No problem that I see just tape the stems and don't go nuts because I have seen metal warp by to much just get them cleaned up.

No problem, go for it.

Putz and EX-JUNK are right on. I might put an extra five PSI in the tires and go for it. The extra air will push the tire out slightly againts the rim of the wheel to prevent sand/glass fromm accumulating in an area that might work it's way in towards the bead.

Sand blast or glass bead gloves are rubber and last quite some time.

I'm out of town this week and ah....... need some good rodding. No not that.

Just had that done to my tandem axle trailer wheels last month. They came out looking real nice with a rattle can paint job. Just put 1900 miles on them to and from T-Bucket Nats. No problem with wheels, just a shredded tire. It was old.

Some time, years ago, I heard that there was a chance to have the tire explode from the friction (and static elecrtricity) of the sand blasting. I don't know, that's why I'm asking.

Thanks

i'd say just stay away from the lip of the wheel, do the last lil bit with a wire wheel. Your tire wont explode unless for some reason its inflated with nitromethane fumes
