Starting at the front

Gentlemen, Is a T that handles an oxymoron? I have seen different set ups that positioned the front axle so that there is no lateral movement while cornering. One appeared to be a tongue & groove arrangement that fitted between the axle and and the spring mount and it looked to be a potential binding point for axle movement. The other was a three point setup that had the anchor points to either side of the frame and one point on the axle. Is the last effective? And relatively easy to make and tune? I will be staring with either a used frame and will adapt a front end system or maybe a new frame with the adaption already done. I really like Donsrod`s frame layout and would like to copy the lines of that if possible. If there frame plans or pictures I would really like to see them. If anyone has any comments or observations please jump in. And I mean anyone.

Thanks, John

Straight and fast is all we need right? Well maybe not. They won't handle like a slot car, but they do OK because of their lite weight.

Dons car is really nice and a great example of how to.

Dons car is been a guide for many of us.

They can handle well.
Best front set up with out bind is a dead prech on one side of spring, but in the end wheels still must be balanced and ture, you do need shocks up front....,bump steer can be a factor if design is wrong for steering rod.
One thing that also helps id a sq. set up of axles. Some rods have not been set up with corner balance= with driver in rod, jack dead center of rear end housing with sharp jack point to see if both rear wheels lift off very close to same time. If one tire lifts a lot before other=out of balance and will pull hard to one side, all other things being set rite.

Thanks guys for the nice words. It's just a driver, but I have to admit it is a lot of fun. Handling on any of these things is a subjective kind of deal. Regardless of what we like to say about our rods, they can't ride like a Mercedes, after all, we are riding around on 100 year old technology for the most part. However, they can be made to handle reasonably well and go down the road straight and take turns well too. If you are really looking for a good handling rod, I think radial tires probably do a lot toward that, however I have no experience with them on a hot rod.............I use bias plies exclusively because I'm lost in the 50's. Even with those and 10 inch slicks on the rear I still like the way mine rides though.

Saturday I went to a little car show and left at 4:30. I didn't feel like going home yet and the weather was great, so I just kept driving. Four hours later I pulled into the shop, and had a blast cruising down the road. I was able to run right along with traffic with no ill handling issues, and most of the time I can one hand it.

The point of that is, if you incorporate some modern items like slider buttons in the springs or Posies that are set up that way, plus all new components in the steering and some degree of good engineering, they can be made to ride and handle very acceptably. Don't ask me how my butt felt when I climbed out four hours later...........that's another story altogether!

Don

Just another example of old technology not being a good as new!

As for mine, it's all moved around up front and left nothing out back! Least that's what the wife says...

Don, a quick reference to something I saw in the NTBA forum. Had to do with golf cart or 10 in. inner tubes for seat cushions. Also I have been following your son`s RPU construction and other than the powder coat miscue (which will be fixed, I`m sure), the craftsmanship and attention to detail are amazing. Again, without being pushy (too much), is there any documentation on the frame buildup on the black car? Also wouldn`t mind hearing from Exjunk (again, the frame is a thing of beauty), Ted Brown, Youngster, Fred,
and the excellent fab person from Kansas (name slips me right now). It will come to me sooner or later.

Again thanks, John.

I believe you are referring to Lee_in_KC

Now I know I'm not on the A-list, but that won't stop me from letting ya know what I did... which was a seat spring in mine... way more comfortable than the foam on wood that was originally on the car... only part I messed up on was 15 degree seat angle and making it 15 inches... I didn't have the privilege of Youngster's input when I was building mine... but I've driven over 300 miles in a day with that setup and was good...

Please LumenAl, your input is always welcome. The fabricator is named Barnes. Didn`t know Lee_IN _KC was a fabricator. Spirit car w/blown sml. block, right? So much talent here, so little time.

Tomorrow, John. George Barnes, that`s it.

No worries OFJ, I was just having a little fun... an oh yes Geroge Barnes aka GAB... around these parts we call him, "Sir Master Fabricator Extraordinaire!"
