steering column support

I have another question, will the fiber glass body support the steering column or do I need to put a brace across that extends down to the frame and install a steering column drop on the brace. I appreciate the information you guys have given me since this is my first experience with fiber glass. This is a real learning experience.

On mine there is wood support on back of dash hooked to that then a swivel through body.
Here is the swivel it is mullins.

I built a 1/2 sq tubing support from windshield stantion to stantion and welded a plate on it to attach my column drop to .

If you have a good bond to your 5/8 to 3/4 plywood onto the back of your fire wall, no real need for more support if 3 or 4 bolts are used to bolt the column to the fire wall... Mine has lasted well over 20 years of very hard use.. :blush:

I'm with Ted on this one. I use 3/4' plywood on the back of the firewall and attach it with kitty hair and then tab it with glass mat around the edges. For attaching the column support I use 'T' nuts. Use a spade drill for wood to keep them below the surface of the glass firewall so the aluminum or SS cover lays flat. I mount my steering box thru the fire wall so I use the same proceedure to bolt the bottom mount to the plywood.

Thanks guys you have given me some very helpful info, I think I can mount my column now without putting to much strain on the fiberglass.

Heres a sugestion, I used a steel plate bolted to the fire wall. This gave me a sturdy platform to weld studs and brackets to. -Don

Now thats a nice clean simple dash!!!!!!

That looks good Don. Is that lever to the left your gear shift?

What is your steering box Don? That's an awesome build. That heater would be a great addition here in Minnesota Too.
