Does anybody have any pictures or advice on how to make a suicide shifter? I would like to have a shifter outside the body, on the drivers side, sticking up from under the frame. I have a turbo 350 trans if it makes any difference. I wouldn't know where to start on the linkage. Here is a picture to get an idea of what I want.
OK here is what I did on my C4. I just when right inside the body on the same side you want to go.....Maybe I can get some better photos and then you would just make the shaft longer and go under the body or through it.....Hope this helps...
On my TP car there is a nice small area between the frame and the body where I bet a standard race type shifter would fit (like B&M etc). They use a cable to the transmission so location is flexible. You would just need to modify it so the shifter lever is spaced out the side instead of straight out the top. Looking at the attached picture you could chop the shifter off right above the plates and modify the lower part so it is spaced out 4" or so. The attach your custom 3" tall shifter lever. I've thought about this plenty of times but not have tackled it yet. No time.
Thanks guys. Mike, do you have any more pictures of that linkage? I would like to see how it hooks to your transmission. Also, what did you use for the bushing?

I have used a cable shift before and they will work fine but most of the time that cable will be rather long because of how you will need to set the shifter and how it works on the trans.
My linkage only moves about 3 inches on both ends, but the shaft only moves about 1/2 inch and by going on the other side of the frame I get the shifter out of the middle of the floor...That was the whole point, not for looks............That bushing is "Delrin", machines just like steel/aluminum......The shaft, levers. & the bracket is aluminum......I will get a couple photos today because I have the car on the rack today...........

Thanks Mike, I like the idea of your linkage better. Just because I could drill a hole in the side of the body to have the shifter sticking out of instead of having to cut out a channel if I used the cable shifter. I want this type of shifter purely for looks like in the picture I posted originally. I'll be waiting on those pictures.. thanks!
I saw one at one of the SEMA shows last year, he had used a piece of 3/4" hotroll shaft, drilled a clearance hole thru the frame. On the inside of the frame used a piece of angle welded to the frame with a pillarblock bearing mounted to it....
On the outside of the frame, a piece of 1/4"x4" flatbar welded to the top of the frame coming out to the edge of the body with another pillarblock bearing fastened to the 1/4" flatbar. Rather simple, yet very, very strong....
