I started a 35+ year career with Illinois Bell Telephone (AT&T before the break up) as an installer when they still offered party lines. We had to rewire the phones before installing them for either party 1 or party 2. Thank the good lord they dropped 4 and 8 party lines before I began working for them.

Never knew that party line phones had special wiring .my folks started out with a "party line"then some time in the mid 60s we got a "semi private line"with just 1 neighbor on it.I still remember our ring tone 2 long and 1 short ,Waiting for "the ring"was so ingrained that I have family members that to this day will pause for an added ring before picking up the phone!
