And now for an IRS horror story

I have a Halibrand QC IRS:

Coming home last week from a cruise, a thumping developed that became worse in a turn. The next morning I jacked up the rear...and this fell out!

Now I'm used to things not working, but parts falling out of the suspension make me uncomfortable. So I pulled the upright and half-shaft, and found this:

It appears to be a decapitated bolt that held on the bushing that fell out. And the bushing was bouncing around and intermittently jamming the U-joint, causing the thumping. Or so I surmise. The whole thing is now at a shop that is going to disassemble it and see what is needed to make it right. And we'll check the U-joint bearings since I can't remember when I last greased them. Halibrand quit making this unit 20 years ago and they have no info and no parts, so it is something of a mystery. Stay tuned.

Yep, that is the anti-thumping washer. More seriously, glad you made it home safely and got it figured out. Nice rear end there lady, more humor!

I think the rear end is junk so I'll come get it and dispose of it for you! LOL
ORF, you are one helpful buckethead. First you took my useless wife off my hands, and now this. I'm sending it to you today, packed with my old barbells, and shipping COD.

I found several hundred anti-thumping washers on Amazon. I kinda like the titanium with black chrome finish, although the shocking pink metalflake is nice too.

Zing and OUCH!

Aren't parts suppose to fall off these things? Mine do ... you know, if you moved back to southern Oklahoma or north Texas, these kind of things wouldn't happen.

Milt, my blood has thinned to where I can never return to 100F summers. In fact I'm thinking of retiring to ND or maybe Canada. Wait, I'm already retired...maybe when I get old I'll move.

Shop says there are two bearings in upright that support the hub. Gonna replace them and U-joint bearings, and have pulled the other side to do the same:

More pics coming.

Went to shop and checked it out:

The hub, at top, with outer bearing on it. The bearing press fits into the outer groove in the upright. Then the inner bearing, at left, presses onto the U-joint and the assy presses into this side of hub, engaging with the splines on the hub.. And a bushing and bolt and it's done. Going to use sealed U-joint bearings, no greasing required.

I have either a C2 or C3 Corvette IRS. When making a 3 point turn the other day, I heard a loud snap and this is what happened. I can't find anyone who made this wishbone design for this differential. I guess I will have to make a beefier one. It had 1/2" bolts. I will upgrade it to 5/8".

Interesting. That is obviously not Vette stock, and it does look a bit fragile. Are the hubs Vette?
