drive shaft protection?

Could you instead of a piece of tube, take that tube, cut it in half and weld it along the top? That way you would get the protection and still allow water/dirt to fall out of the bottom.

Though it seems that the protection would be getting a bit heavy by this point, not sure if it would be an issue hanging off the back of the transmission.
